A little piece of our family history

The roots of our farm in Cedar Fort stretch back more than a century.

David Alvin Berry was born February 9, 1862. He was a hardworking farmer who raised grain and alfalfa on several pieces of land in the Cedar Fort fields. He also owned five lots in Cedar Fort where the family grew vegetables. What they didn’t use themselves was taken to the nearby mining town of Mercur and sold along with cream, butter, and milk produced by the family’s cows.

In 1907, David was called on a mission to Missouri, where he served until 1909.

When he returned home, the federal government had opened the Cedar Valley for homesteading. David and his family moved a house down from the mining town of Sunshine and made it their home on 160 acres of homesteaded land. They later purchased an additional 200 acres.

Near their home, the family planted a large orchard and garden. They raised grain and alfalfa and grazed cattle, sheep, and horses on the surrounding land. They also raised pigs and chickens.

David became known as a prosperous farmer in the valley, but his story was about more than farming. He was remembered for being honest in his dealings and generous to those around him. There was always a place at his table for someone who needed a meal.

David Alvin Berry passed away on February 22, 1918, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, honesty, farming, and family.
More than 100 years later, those farming roots are still part of our family’s story here in Cedar Fort. Today, we’re grateful to carry a small piece of that legacy forward at Sweet Berry Farms.

There’s something pretty special about knowing that generations before us worked this same Cedar Valley soil — and that we get to continue sharing our family’s love of farming with all of you.

Over 100 years of family farming in Cedar Fort, Utah.
