Memorial Day I went out St Patrick's Cemetary in Stoneham, MA to take a picture of our Great great grandfather's grave marker. He died after the war, but thousands of his brothers-in-arms gave "the last full measure of their devotion," to set people free and to preserve the Union. May they be not forgotten.

"Some of Our Yesterdays," is a memoir written by Charles Seton Lindsay, a young man who ran away from his New Jersey home to New York City at age 17 to join the Union Army in 1861. The unit he managed to accept him was the 36th New York Volunteer Infantry, a volatile mixture of working class English and Irish toughs from the Bowery and the Five Points. Lindsay describes many of the pivotal and historic events of the the war as participant and observer up until he was mustered out just before the Battle of Gettysburg in June 1863.. What he saw and what he experienced is vividly brought to life in his self-taught writing style. It includes a fascinating relationship with an escaped slave, named Pipsico who acts as servant and companion throughout Lindsay's service. it's a great read for anybody interested in the 36th New York or anyone interested in a common soldier's observations of war.

I came across an interesting map of the Second Battle of Fredericksburg. This is from the Library of Congress. It shows the action where the 36th NY participated in the capture of Marye's Heights. Happy Memorial Day once again!
