Despite the fact that there is still snow on the ground, the first 50 degree day of the year makes us start thinking about getting our garden seeds started. The growing calendar at https://www.burpee.com/growingcalendar can be really helpful to get seeds started at the correct time for your zone.

Also, stay tuned for some exciting pig news coming....The flurry of spring is just around the corner!

What are you most excited about growing in your garden this year?

Winter on the homestead...As society moved away from agrarian lifestyles, the concept of seasonal living has largely been lost with our unrelenting schedules.

Nature operates in cycles. If we mimic these cycles in our lives, we can experience the much needed rest associated with winter. This can be a time for rejuvenation, planning for the future, and preparation for the abundance of spring, summer and fall.

We are very thankful for the rest this winter has provided, but greatly anticipate the coming of spring. We are looking forward to more pigs, expanding elderberry production, and hopefully having our very own fruit available for others.

What are you most excited about for spring?

Permaculture design teaches us to turn constraints or problems into resources or solutions. It is the goal to turn the problem into a solution.

Some would say that getting over 100lbs of manure a DAY from our two cows is a HUGE problem…The permaculture orchard and garden are going to love the composted manure come spring as we work to increase the fertility of our property. I hope you can find a solution from a crappy situation in your life!

Happy New Year! 2020 was a hard year for many. Yet, the Hoffman family found much to be thankful for. We took some risks, got some animals, planted some trees, and learned to love each other more. It definitely wasnt always easy, but oh it was so worth it. Here is to a new year of adventures, new clients, helping more (maybe even sleeping more), more fruit (literally) and definitely lots of milk.

2020 was a big year. We embarked on our wide opened space and planted about 100 fruit trees, raised 4 pastured rotated pigs, added 4 sheep, and just acquired a new (to us) Jersey cow. Our homestead is just beginning, but we cannot wait to see what 2021 brings as we continue to adventure into new spaces.

In 2018, we lost Rusty's brother, Ryan and his fiance in an apartment fire. To honor his legacy and remember his brother, Ryan's Orchard and Farm Market was created. We planted about 100 fruit tree in 2020 and have been raising pasture raised animals as well. Our desire is to carry on Ryan's legacy while engaging in regenerative sustainable agriculture on our 13 acres.
