A number of studies over the past decade have examined how people respond to different levels of makeup. One widely discussed study from 2014, conducted by researchers at Bangor University and the University of Aberdeen, asked women to apply makeup for different situations while photos were taken at varying levels of cosmetic use. The images were later rated by both men and women. Researchers found that male participants generally selected the versions with lighter makeup as more attractive compared to heavier applications. The lighter looks were also more frequently associated with traits such as approachability, honesty, and health. At the same time, many female participants predicted that men would prefer more dramatic makeup styles, creating a noticeable difference between expectation and the study’s results. The research focused on perception rather than objective attractiveness, examining how facial presentation influences first impressions and social judgments. A comparison between cosmetic styles ended up showing a gap between what participants assumed people preferred and what they consistently selected during rating tests.
