Please say a little prayer for me and my “little” hillside flower garden. 🙏🏻 For anyone else crazy enough to convince your hubby to till up a 1/4 acre of your yard, I highly recommend you know how many flower seeds it will take to cover said area before tilling up the yard! 🫢 Let’s just say, even after calculating, I think I still need more seeds…but we’re gonna do this thing like we do everything around here and “wing it”!

We have been hatching our chicks out all spring. We did the same last year, too! Last year, we sold 6 pullets to a coworker. This year, they asked if we could take three back because those three were getting picked on in their small in-town coop. We happily took our three back and they all adjusted well, except for one white hen. She just sat on the roost all day and seemed lonely. Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago, we moved chicks from the brooder to the coop and lo and behold, that hen WAS lonely! She quickly took it upon herself to “mother” all 32 chicks we moved to the coop. She has purpose now and she’s the best momma to these chicks. Calling them when she finds scraps, showing them how to scratch and at night, she’s always sitting on the ground with all 32 of them huddled around her! 🤍

It’s been awhile since we put a garden in the ground. Now that we will be home more often, after hanging up our grazing hats, thought we would give it a whirl again. No more patio tomatoes for us. We still have some garden security to do (to keep the rabbits, raccoons, dogs and chickens out), but for the most part, it’s up and ready to grow! Need to add a gate, and some electric fencing.

Sweet corn, okra, cherry tomatoes, roma tomatoes, slicer tomatoes, bell peppers, mini sweet peppers, banana peppers, jalapeño peppers, asparagus, strawberries, green beans, cucumbers, zucchini, carrots , onions, garlic, loofahs (for soap making) and birdhouse gourds & mammoth sunflowers (for the birds).

Eleven more babies are back at the farm thanks to the kiddos at Prairie Hill Elementary for hatching them out. We still have one more hatching group next week from Prairie Crest Elementary. Who wants to guess how many chicks/chickens we have on the farm, right now?

I’ll give you a little help, in that we started with 32 chickens before we started hatching chicks out this spring. We’ve hatched at Prairie Hills Assisted Living, Ely Public Library, Boulder Creek Intermediate and Prairie Hill Elementary so far.
