Our customers are often surprised that our salty lemonades are made with limes. With the exception of some of our flavors where we would use fermented lemons or kumquats, 98% of the time we use limes that have been fermented in salt water for over a year. However, our pre-made salty lemonade drinks do have lemon juice in it, so it is accurate to call it lemonade and not limeade.

But did you know, in Vietnamese, the word for lemon or lime is the exact same word? They are both called "chanh", so "salty lemonade" is called "chanh muoi". "Chanh" is lemon or lime, and "muoi" is salt. "Salty lemonade" is the actual name of the Vietnamese drink and not just the description of the drink. You won't find much lemons in the Vietnamese culture so when you ask for lemonade, it is often made with limes. And if you specifically want lemon, you have to mention the yellow one, as in lemon.

Another important note to remember -- salty lemonade "chanh muoi" is not lemonade with salt. A general salty lemonade with salt is not "chanh muoi". For it to be "chanh muoi", or Vietnamese salty lemonade, it has to have the element of fermented (preserved) lemon or lime in salt water. Without it, then it is literally just general lemonade with salt, but definitely not Vietnamese salty lemonade "chanh muoi". The lemons or limes go through a very long fermented process that gives it its unique taste and medicinal benefits. When you ask for "chanh muoi", there are certain unique traits to the drink and those who know, know exactly what it is. But now a day, not many young people know about "chanh muoi" because it is not being shared widely, so you might have to explain to them what it is, and it's definitely not lemonade with salt.

Orange Salty is like our Original Salty but on the fruity side. Really nice.

Home made soy yogurt using part of the starter that I have had for over 5 years. I've been making this yogurt for over a decade now, and whenever I make it, people love it. And it's super easy. I save a little bit from each batch and use it for the next batch. On a warm day, I put the top on and leave it on the counter overnight and the next day the lid would pop completely because it is very active. Maybe one day I will stock it here in the shop in Escondido.

Growing up I never liked yogurt. People around me loved it, but to me, yogurt tasted gross -- until I had yogurt for the first time in France. There's a yogurt there that I love, and since then I started to have an appreciation for yogurt. This soy yogurt that I make has a smooth, light tangy taste that is amazing with fruits and nuts in the morning. Sometimes, depending on the batch, it has almost like a kefir taste, but yummier. Because it's not thick like other yogurt, it is very easy to mix in. It is literally the only yogurt I eat, unless when I'm in France of course.

Introducing a new flavor this week: Blueberry! (level 1) A few customers have requested this flavor for years now -- so here it is!!!! This flavor has a subtle blueberry taste, not fruity like the other fruity flavors. Very refreshing!

Lavender salty (level 1) is also available this week. This flavor is a huge fan favorite. But honestly, all our flavors are amazing!

Flavors of the week: Arnold Palmer salty (level 1). Best lemonade iced tea on Earth!!! Try it to believe it! 😀😀😀. This Arnold Palmer has a sweet, smooth taste due to the high quality sweetness of the tea, but we also use the sweet fermented lemon syrup in here as well. It's the same fermented lemon syrup that we use in our apple c***r vinegar lemonade concentrate. This flavor is becoming a quite requested flavor lately.

We will also have some of the more fermented strawberry flavor (Level 1.75+), as well as Classic Salty (level 1)

Mama et Moi (the guiding star and the person who taught me how to make salty lemonade). Old picture of us in France.

Recently, we had a three-year celebration at the Best Salty Lemonade shop in Escondido. During the celebration, we had a trivia contest about Best Salty Lemonade. Out of about 25 people who participated, a few got most of the questions correct. However, one fact that no one knew is that I had to fly all the way to Europe to get the salty lemonade transmission (recipe) from my Mom. She was living in France then, and I hadn’t seen her in a while, so it was the perfect time to go. My intention was to ask her when we were in France, but so much was happening that it wasn’t until we took a trip to Germany that I could ask her. I remember we were just hanging out outside when I asked her about salty lemonade. She explained to me how she did it, but she didn’t have an exact recipe or measurement, or anything like that. She said “it’s all in the hands”. I understood what she meant and wrote down the instructions on a small piece of paper that I could find. I kept that small piece of paper while living in San Francisco, and after moving down to San Diego and being burnt out with work and corporate life, was when I attempted my first batch of salty lemonade. It’s a personal batch that I still have, and that was in 2016, almost a decade ago. So crazy!

Although I do have a recipe of how I make it, when I started my first batch using the information my Mom told me, I applied the same intuition of “it is all in the hands” of how you prepare it. And the same technique of “It’s in the hands” is also applied when I blend my drinks. The intuition that my Mom was talking about is mainly the energy that you put into it, and the foundation of that energy has a lot to do with mindfulness, love and care, which makes Best Salty Lemonade extra special, or l like to say extra SALTY.

This is a picture of me and my Mom in the South of France. This was taken a few years prior to my salty lemonade transmission trip. I just realized that I don’t have any recent pictures of just me and my Mom at all.

Did you know, we have a morning ritual here at the Best Salty Lemonade shop in Escondido? Right when we open, we burn sage and offer a prayer to begin the day. We get comments all the time that the shop has a really nice smell and peaceful energy, and this is one of the reasons why. If you come right when we open, you will most likely see us doing it.
