Did you know??

Rhododendrons have a nectar that contains Grayanotoxins I and III: which can seriously disorient honeybees and even cause paralysis and death within hours?

If they make it back to the hive and make honey from it, that honey can make you sick in high concentrations. In some countries, it is used as a recreational hallucinogenic drug or "mad honey".

Bumblebees have an immunity to the toxins but honeybees and many native bees do not. Please keep in mind when planning your gardens!

Next spring, I will be holding a class to teach you how to plant a pollinator garden to support the honeybees in your area. Stay tuned 😉

Tomorrow is harvest day! Shoutout to my brother Dave and my little tiny helper Evelyn. Beekeeping has brought my brother and I closer. This is our second summer working on hives together. I started out teaching him what little I knew and we grew and learned most of the rest together through experience, research and brainstorming with one another. It is rare to see one of us out in the bee yard without the other one. This year, Dave made his own hives by hand. I absolutely love the honey, but I have to say my favorite part of beekeeping is sharing this time with my family.

What a surprise to see our bees have started making PURPLE honey!! 💜 🐝 🍯 For those that have never heard of purple honey- it's a rare find- ESPECIALLY to see happen in Michigan.

This summer started a little later than last year with the warmer temperatures. Just a few weeks before we will be harvesting our first harvest of honey for 2026 and we are excited.
