The CSA Members have VOTED!! And the WINNER is the Blue Hubbard Squash as FAVORITE Winter Squash.
The Hubbard was recorded as arriving in Marblehead Mass in 1798 from the West Indies or South America. The nickname "poor man's turkey" is a descriptive term that is still used today to emphasize the squash's affordability and versatility as a holiday meal centerpiece. The sweet, nutty, and starchy flavor of the Hubbard, with its fine-grained, golden-yellow flesh, and its high nutritional value just stands above all other winter squashes. It is a great source of vitamins A and C, fiber, and potassium. It is excellent for roasting, baking, pureeing into soups, or mashing like potatoes. Its storage qualities can last up to six months, a practical and enduring ingredient for fall and winter cooking. The wonderful flavor goes well in both sweet and savory preparations but is perhaps most delicious when prepared simply: roasted, topped with butter, salt, and a crack of fresh pepper. Be on the lookout for The Hubbard Squashes in the CSA shares during October! -Farmer Carol
