Well Hello Baby! Seven out and another piping!

So, this incubator holds 22 eggs. I had roughly 11 black copper marans eggs and the rest either golden sebrights and cream crested legbar eggs, all are from my hens. Of the 11 bcm, I have had 7 hatch and just waiting a couple more days to see if anymore are going to hatch. I try to candle them but the shells are too dark, so I just let them be until lock down and hatch. Sometimes I feel as though people that buy hatching eggs from me and don’t have a “good” hatch rate, think I sell them poor eggs. I realize not all eggs will be fertilized, how did the person transport them, their incubator and many other factors that come with it. When they contact me and say only a low number hatched, I try to make it right with that person and I myself, put more eggs in the incubator to see for myself. Newly hatched today.

This little chick has had a rough time. It was piping since the middle of the night on Tuesday and when I got home from work yesterday, it could quite get broke out of the shell and was dry and almost shrink wrapped with the membrane. I helped it as much as I could and some of the shell and membrane was dried to its back and one wing glued to its side. I laid it in the brooder box with the other chicks that have hatched and hoped for the best. This morning it was flopping a little and still crusted as last night. I ran the faucet with warm water and just started rinsing its back and wing in hopes it would loosen and it did. Chick is doing pretty good so far but looks like it’s been through heck and back!
