Keeper of Flocks Homestead

Keeper of Flocks Homestead My name is Jackson & I am a young kid with a passion for all animals! I love my feathered flock🐓🦆 He loves them all to pieces!

A Keeper of Flocks homestead started as our son's dream of turning his love for his flock of chicken's, duck's & turkey's into a business. He has been caring for the flock almost entirely on his own, feeding/watering/cleaning them, incubating eggs & caring for new chicks and he also never forgets to lock them up at night. He is learning about keeping track of the flocks expenses, has a record keep

ing book to log egg production/feed history/health/coop maintenance and also to track his earnings from selling eggs. His animal family consists of Appenzellar Spitzhauben's, Japanese bantam's, Serama's, Turken "naked necks", Standard Polish, Australorp, Barred Rock, Welsummer's, light & dark Brahma's, Olive Eggers, Mystic Marans, Miget White Turkeys, Bourbon Red Turkey, Roen duck, and Cayuga ducks. Also, can't leave out his whites tree frog that is 4 yrs old (raised from a baby), a cockatiel and 2 dogs! His goals are to grow his egg business by adding more laying hens, breed some of his flock, sell baby chicks and help others learn about caring for their feathered flock too!

We lost 7 of our naked necks on Mother’s Day and have one in the house that is severely injured.😢 Praying that she makes it.

Owning livestock is beautiful, but it’s also brutal.

People show the good parts. The chicks hatching. The newborns learning to stand. That first wobble. That first feed. And yes, it’s magical. It’s what keeps you going.

But what they don’t show is the grief.
The way you walk into the barn and something’s wrong.
The panic. The helplessness. The silence that follows.

We don’t just own animals, we love them.
Even when we have dozens, we know each one. Their quirks. Their sounds. Their routines.
We bottle feed them. We cheer for their first steps. We hope for them.

And when we lose one, it wrecks us.
No, it doesn’t get easier.
Not when you loved them like that.

You still cry in the stall.
You still carry the guilt.
You still bury them with your own two hands and whisper “I’m sorry” even if you did everything you could.

This life is raw.
It’s real.
It’s soul work.
And it hurts, because love always does.

Via MSP: Reminder to always be aware while driving.

On Thursday, April 24 at approximately 12:45 pm a 19 year old male from Sterling Heights was traveling eastbound on I-96 near Fowlerville Rd in Livingston County when a turkey flew into the path of his 2022 Ford F-250 pickup.

The turkey was struck by the vehicle windshield ending up inside the vehicle.

The driver was able to maintain control of his vehicle and avoided turning this into a major crash. No injuries to the driver. Turkey not so much.

Turkey hunting season runs from April 20-June 7 this year. Be on the lookout for turkeys that may fly into the path of your vehicle as they attempt to elude hunters.

Poor turkey...

This is one reason we love our roosters! 🐓

Roosters are not the enemy. They protect those under their care. They will sacrifice themselves to save the flock. He doesn’t back down, not one step, even if it cost his life. He has a family to protect and he’ll sacrifice everything for them. It’s the embodiment of “My life before theirs” ❤️🧑‍🌾

This remarkable photo was made by Shasta Schlitt - BYC (BackYardChickens) of her rooster, Jay, defending a hen against an unlucky hawk. Unfortunately, the hawk didn't survive the attack. Jay had some puncture wounds but is OK.
