The best research and plan doesn’t mean a darn thing unless you follow through… and so I owe all of the success of our apiary to this guy…seen putting the insulation back up 🆙 n a cold drizzly morning before work. He built the bee-house according to my Slovenian inspired design. I’ll take you all in a tour as soon as we’ve got the Tyvek covered.

Spring Apiary Update🐝🌱:

The snow is just about gone, and the bees have found their first real sign of spring: Crocuses in bloom.

We’re seeing steady foraging flights, with bees returning loaded with pollen and nectar. Inside the hive, things are ramping up. The queen is laying, larvae are present, and the population is beginning to expand.

It’s a great shift to see this time of year from tight winter clusters to active, growing colonies.

Spring buildup is officially underway!

Ohh, baby!! It’s warming up in the hives! That means baby bees are on the way!

🐝 Winter Hive Check at Copper Wings Honeybee Company ❄️

Even while the Keweenaw is still in winter mode, our bees are hard at work inside their hives. Using a thermal camera, we can safely check colony activity without opening the hive and disturbing the cluster.

The warm spots you see in these images show where the bees are gathered together, keeping their colony alive through the cold months. A healthy hive will maintain a warm cluster at the center while the outside world stays chilly.

These checks help us monitor hive health and make sure our colonies have the best chance to thrive as the season changes.

Spring isn’t far away now — and the bees are already getting ready. 🌼🐝🍯

It’s a beautiful sunny day in the Keweenaw! ☀️🐝

We (temporarily) removed the front insulation panels from the hive entrances to let the sunshine warm the hive faces — a clear signal to the bees that it was time for a much-needed cleaning flight.

And wow… were they ready! The girls were buzzing with excitement, soaking up the sunshine, stretching their wings and marking the snow yellow. Spring is coming! 💛

🐝✨ Our girls are hard at work, gathering nectar and pollen from vibrant wildflowers around the apiary 🌼. Each golden drop they collect will be transformed into the honey that sustains our colonies through the long Keweenaw winter ❄️🍯.
