Oh don’t mind the hair!!! Here is an update on our potato sprout rescues from last week. They are all doing well and we are bedding them down for the long haul. Why am I planting potatoes now? BECAUSE WE CAN!!! J/K Texas has a very extended grow season and our winters are mild, as long as I keep them relatively safe from the frost we are good. Why do we use soil and straw? We are providing a remedy for a few problems with this method. 1) potatoes don’t necessarily like how hard and compacted the soil I grow bags can get sometimes; 2) when the soil is to tight, your water will not get down to the roots; 3) using a grow bag with just straw and no soil or no way for the potato roots to pull nutrients from, results in a weaker yield. Solution- plant in 4 to 6 inches of mixed grow material, then finish the fill with the straw! Love it
