The BEST flock addition for northern climates!
Welcome to the Red Shed little Hedemora chicks! These birds came from NorthWoods Poultry, which I highly recommend! I bought a dozen hatching eggs and she kindly gave me 4 extra! 13 of the 16 hatched! (Her flock pictures are posted after my own). Please go check her out!
I’m excited to grow this breed and spread awareness about their existence in our northern backyard communities!
Available at The Red Shed in 2027
A little about the breed:
🥚There’s an estimated global population of only around 2,000 Hedemora birds. They were first legally imported to the United States in 2010 by Greenfire Farms. Currently, only a handful of breeders have them in the US.
🥚The Hedemora is an ancient, ultra-rare Swedish landrace chicken breed widely considered to be the most cold-hardy chicken in the world.
🥚Developed naturally over 500 years in the freezing, northern climate of Hedemora, Sweden, these birds evolved for maximum survival and utility rather than human-selected physical appearance.
🥚They Built for Extreme Cold!
Every aspect of the Hedemora's anatomy is adapted to prevent frostbite and combat sub-zero temperatures
🥚They have a dense undercoat: They possess an exceptionally thick layer of down under their outer plumage for premium insulation.
🥚Featuring small single combs and tiny wattles minimizes exposed areas prone to freezing.
🥚Egg Production: Reliable laying through winter
🥚Docile, friendly, and highly active foragers who willingly search for food directly in deep snow.
