Get to know your fishermen! John is the best half of Coast to Coast Salmon and heading into his 8th season fishing in Bristol Bay.

John is our original connection to Alaska - he forged the path! He started out fishing at a young age off the coast of his hometown in Lincolnville, Maine, and as the state of Maine fisheries changed, he looked to Alaska’s thriving and sustainable sockeye fishery for a way to keep earning a living while working on the water. In Alaska, John found a crew with unmatchable camaraderie and experience, a local community that looks out for one another, and ultimately a way of life that keeps him coming back year after year.

John is more than a fisherman on our crew - he’s our mechanic, welder, electrician, builder… and all-around “John of all trades”. When something malfunctions in our short season, it can make or break things. Fortunately, John is a wizard… he always finds a way to get things back into working shape to keep operations running when it matters most.

It takes a certain kind of person to head across country and build a life like this. That’s John. He’s pushed beyond the bounds of a more traditional path to find meaning in places like Bristol Bay - and through Coast to Coast Salmon, he brings that experience full circle to share with his hometown communities.

Get to know your fishermen! Hi, I’m Courtney—I'm one half of Coast to Coast Salmon and I’m heading into my third season fishing in Bristol Bay!

Fishing in Bristol Bay has profoundly reshaped the way I think about food. Growing up in an urban area, I always wondered where the protein behind the packaging came from—now I have a direct connection to one of the last great wild harvestable protein systems on earth.

Fishing is rugged, but for a season, the noise of the world falls away. Life follows the tides, the winds, and the salmon, grounding me in the simple and essential rhythms of nature. Out on the bay, we build a direct relationship with the fish—and what makes Bristol Bay so special is how intentional it is. We all work together out there - the fishermen, scientists, and industry have a shared commitment to protecting the salmon as a renewable resource to ensure healthy ecosystems and strong runs for generations to come.

Being part of this fishery has me celebrating wild abundance while holding a real respect for the responsibility that comes with it. It’s shown me what’s possible when we remember we are part of nature—not separate from it—and begin to see ourselves within the same cycles that bring food to our tables. Coast to Coast Salmon brings me great joy in connecting Maine to this incredible fish and fishery, with the chance to eat in greater harmony with nature's wild resources.

Rollers are a set-net fisherman’s best friend! They scooch our boat from side-to-side under the net so we can pick fish at a fast pace, helping preserve quality. Rollers also help sustain our bodies by taking on some of the heavy lifting. Well kept gear makes for a safe, efficient and productive day on the water.

There’s a lot of variability in fishing - no two days are the same. Strong tides, weather changes - some days the fish run hard, other days it’s quiet. We take the slow days with the fast ones and patience is part of the job. There are no guarantees, only opportunity and we find gratitude for any fish that graces our nets!
