Here Is What I Did

Here Is What I Did This is the page for HereIsWhatIDid.org, a virtual bulletin board for empowering people to c Being aware of issues is important.

This is the page for HereIsWhatIDid.org, a virtual bulletin board where each of us can stop by and make public something that we have done to contribute to our community in a positive way. Sharing information about issues is crucial. Taking action on those issues is necessary to affect change. And yet all too often we feel overwhelmed by the many tasks before us and fail to summon the ene

rgy and will to take action. HereIsWhatIDid.org provides a virtual space where we can see the actions that others are taking all around us. It provides a place for the individual act to become the collective one. And it recognizes the power of being able to step forward and say: Here Is What I Did to change the world. Whether your action is a small or a large one, whether you were able to donate your time or money to a cause or smile and say a kind word to a tired parent in the line at the grocery store, all our actions add together to create an overwhelming tide of positive change. The more we see that this is happening, the more we can ride that wave to greater change ahead. So check out the website, post your own action, or see what others are up to. We're just getting started, so you can be among the first to stand up and be counted. I'll be highlighting various posts both here and on our other social media platforms. Be kind, be generous, and be active!

Highlighted Post for June!

A friend of mine has co-created a blog on race, whiteness and privilege and posted about it on the website. The racial hierarchy underlying our institutions and the implicit biases buried within ourselves are probably the most important issues facing our country. These are issues that cannot be addressed without some truly difficult conversations. This blog is one of the positive efforts I have seen in this direction. Here's what they say about their blog:

"Our humble, yet ambitious goal is to explore whiteness and privilege with humility, honesty and respect in an effort to better understand race relations both historically and today. We plan to regularly use fairy tales and folklore to frame issues and to show how pervasive they are in our collective consciousness. This is a forum to embrace the discomfort of confronting the ways in which white privilege impacts our relationships, communities, politics and more. We do not have all of the answers; we learn more everyday through experience and scholarship. We encourage you to continue the conversation by sharing our posts in your social networks."

I love our local coffee shop! Not only do they have excellent coffee and comfortable places to perch, but they have this pretty amazing bulletin board. A simple and effective way to build community and affect positive change! Check out my latest post about them on the website: http://www.hereiswhatidid.org/have-a-need-meet-a-need/

An impromptu coupon swap sprung up at my local BJs. The person who started it might have thought it was a fairly inconsequential act, but it caused me to smile and feel more connected to everyone else in the store that afternoon. Anything you can do that causes someone to feel happy and connected is far from inconsequential. Tell me what you've been doing! And if you're looking for ways to make a difference, check out my new resource page: http://www.hereiswhatidid.org/heres-what-you-can-do/

Sometimes helping someone is as close as your front yard or nearby street corner. This is a story that has made the news a couple of times in recent weeks. I liked it so much, I added a link to the story on my website. Check it out! It's an idea worth spreading.!

From time to time I will post stories I come across that represent the positive change this website is designed to support. This is one of those stories:

There is so much to do, and it can be overwhelming to know where to start. Sometimes you just need to know how to take that first step. I love this photo of Jesse Owens, digging in and moving forward with focus and determination. I created Here is What I Did to help inspire you to action, to get you off the starting line, and sometimes that includes providing ideas about what to do. I'm working hard to create a great resources page for this purpose. Check out the first section and tell me what you think!

Here's a recent post from our website. A little human connection goes a long way. How have you found ways to connect to people in your community? Tell us about them! Comment below or visit www.hereiswhatidid.org. We're still a bright and shiny new website and would love to hear from you. Your story is our inspiration!

Our neighborhood is an amazing combination of people of all races, religions, political persuasions, family compositions and walks of life. There are about 40 families living in our little cul de sac and this holiday season I really wanted to express to them all, that in the heart of all the uglines...

People across the nation and the world are taking action to resist the Muslim ban and support our immigrant communities. Actions are ranging from calling government officials, to supporting Muslim organizations or the ACLU, to protesting at airports, to learning more about their Muslim neighbors, and more. Have you done something? Share it in the comments below, or at my website www.hereiswhatidid.org.

The protests against Trump’s Muslim ban, that exploded across the country Friday night and then continued throughout the weekend, also made their way across the pond to thousands of UK people who also took to the streets. The predominant UK protests...

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump spent much of his campaign bashing the federal government, a system he described as awash in "waste fraud and abuse." Now, the bureaucracy is biting back.
