Trying something old-fashioned and practical over here at Hogue’s Farm — water glassing eggs! 🥚

Water glassing is a traditional method of preserving fresh, unwashed eggs using pickling lime and water. It helps seal and protect the eggs so they can last far beyond peak laying season — potentially up to 12-18 months when stored properly!

Why do it? Because chickens don’t always lay consistently year-round, and this is a great way to preserve the abundance from the busy months for baking, cooking, and breakfast later on. It’s simple, cost-effective, and kind of fascinating honestly.

Fresh clean eggs + lime + water + time = a little farm magic. 🤍

Huge thank you to Amy McNeill and Jared for tracking down the pickling lime for me and making a good old-fashioned farm barter deal with eggs involved 🐓 We appreciate you guys!

I swear owning chickens means living in two extremes.
One week I’m a full-on egg enthusiast — scrambled eggs every morning, hard boiled eggs for snacks, breakfast sandwiches on repeat.
The next week? Don’t even say the word “egg” around me. Suddenly they’re offensive and I act like my chickens are personally attacking me by laying more 🥚
Farm life: where the groceries keep reproducing whether you want them or not😂
