Sometimes my heart breaks out here.

Last night, I was thinning my flock and had a guy coming to pick up four layers. Right before he pulled into the yard, Hubs called me outside because there was a baby bunny in the grass.

It didn’t take long to realize something was terribly wrong. The little guy was stumbling and bleeding from the mouth.

And buns are hard to help. I know that firsthand after once spending 20 days sleeping beside one in a shoebox, trying desperately to keep it alive.

But this time, I knew.

There wasn’t anything I could do to save him, and I couldn’t stand the thought of letting him suffer.

About that time, the chicken buyer pulled into the driveway.

I walked up to greet this poor unsuspecting man and, without so much as a hello, asked:

“Are you good at killing things?”

He gave me the most awkward little smile.

“What do you got?”

“I can’t do it,” I told him. “But it has to be done.”

And that, friends, is apparently how we welcome people to the house.

Welcome to my house. I have work for you to do. 😂💔

Homestead life has a way of making your heart incredibly full and breaking it all in the same day. Sometimes loving animals means fighting like hell to save them.

And sometimes it means knowing when not to let them suffer.
