So I am an herbalist , and I have studied plants, nutrition and alternative & allopathic medicine topics for over thirty years. i have grown or purchased dried plant material from many different sources for over twenty eight years. saturday at a farmer's market , I saw a tea and spice vendor. they were letting people choose different dried plants or spices to create their own blend of something to cook with or drink. i watched a young teenager struggling over the different flowers in jars.... Most which I could see were prepared with color fixatives, etc. (i.e. potpourri-grade flowers...not tea-grade). one of the jars contained a purple flower called statice which is odorless and flavorless? Therefore , no point in using it for tea or cooking. but then I saw that the jar was labeled "Forget me nots".... Which sounds like an enchanting thing that you would want to put in a love potion tea? however , forget me nots are poisonous.... they cause liver damage. They are also blue and not purple and difficult to dry....so I immediately told the teenager that the flower she was choosing was not "forget me not" ..... And then I told the purveyor that they shouldn't be teaching people that they can drink something called "forget me not"? after showing the purveyor many articles and photos to back up my point, I convinced her to take the label off the jar. but how many weeks in a row had she been teaching people that they can go forage for forget me nots and drink them? this family is from Turkey and they have been buying potpourri type herbs from street vendors in turkey and I guess filling up their suitcases? they are opening a store in mosaic. I Told them that I fear for people's health and safety since none of them have studied anything botanical beyond google. it is shocking to me that the FDA came to my little Tea Shop 20 yrs ago and tried to shut me down because they took a sample from a jar of peppermint leaf.... And came back and told me that it had an aphid in the sample. duh...organic tea is ALLOWED to contain a certain percent of other organic/non harmful material but I had to get the Herb Guild's lawyer to tell that to the FDA. wake me up in whether it's safe..... And there is no FDA or Health Dept inspecting Mosaic District stores ??
