Chicago played a significant role in the genesis of Banjo Brothers. It was the late 90s and in a different industry when we were afforded an annual August week long trip to the city for the annual National Hardware Show at McCormick place on the company dime. While the rest of the trade show attendees on our team fell into the ritual of migrating from the trade show floor to the hotel bar, we opted out. A pack of single speeds strategically packed in the company rental van along with the show booth and sales samples were our ticket to freedom from tyranny. Before dedicated bike lanes were en vogue, we roamed the city late into the warm summer nights exploring new neighborhoods, dive bars, and restaurants. Toward the end of this run, an even cagier move was bike commuting to the trade show. Not only did one get a little morning pick-me-up to negate some of the previous evening's indulgences, there was nothing sweeter than pedaling away at show close while the rest of the schlubs frittered away another hour in the taxi line .
