🏴💪 Tossing the Caber: Scotland’s Ultimate Test of Strength & Precision
The crowd gathers at the Bridge of Allan Highland Games as athletes prepare for one of Scotland’s most iconic and technically demanding traditional events — Tossing the Caber.
The challenge looks simple, but the technique is anything but. Each competitor must grip the narrow end of a huge wooden caber, lift it onto their shoulder, build momentum and launch it into the air.
The goal isn't simply to throw the log as far as possible.
Instead, competitors must flip the caber end-over-end and try to make it land pointing as close as possible to the 12 o’clock position. The straighter the landing, the better the score.
A typical caber can weigh around 150 pounds (68 kg) and reach up to 17 feet long, making every attempt a serious test of strength, balance, timing and technique.
As the athletes step forward one by one, the spectators cheer them on — witnessing a centuries-old Scottish tradition where power alone isn't enough. Precision decides the winner.
