Last year we took a fabulous trip to El Salvador with our two kids, and from that I've written this 7-day ES travel itinerary hitting up the best beaches, volcano hikes, surf lessons, and restaurants we could find. We fell in love with the Pacific coastline of this country, loved exploring the gorgeous volcanic countryside, and, yes, we ate quite well too!

Is it a butcher shop with a family legacy stretching back to 1900? Is it a burger joint with great lunch specials, or is it a casual custom steakhouse where you can get what you want at nearly half the price you’d find in Manhattan? Truth is, .ottomanelliburgers in Woodside is all of these things.

I’m not much of a red meat eater, but I love this place. Frank, the owner, is a great guy with stories and a wealth of meat knowledge to share. The restaurant regularly gives back to community. The food is great, the vibe is chill, and the prices are fair. It’s so Queens.

Big thanks to .is.drew.now for organizing regular group dinners here for my Eat Something New in Queens FB group (join via the link in the bio!), including the one I attended last week that inspired this week’s Eats in Queens interview + writeup.

The Winter Pool House at doesn’t get enough love!

A heated outdoor saltwater pool, cedar barrel saunas, spa services, a spacious but cozy heated/tented lounge strewn with soft, fuzzy pillows and blankets, a menu of great drinks and snacks—it’s a wintertime revelation. (Pictured is the classic toddy from the HOT TODDY MENU and the delicious homemade chips and dip.😊)

Hotel and spa guests get access included, but day passes (from $50) exist too, and are very popular with Rockaway locals. In fact, I love how locals-oriented this entire property is (the owners grew up in Rockaway Beach).

A few weeks ago we hosted my husband’s birthday party at the hotel, and our friends and I took full advantage of the Pool House—even swimming in the snow—before having a terrific family-style meal at on-site and dancing for hours on the 6th floor at after that. I can’t recommend the experience enough. It’s a one-stop NYC staycation.

*Limited pics because I was too busy enjoying myself! 🏊‍♀️❄️🥂

What a pleasure to have open up around the corner from me last week—and even more so to meet the kind staff and interview the owner, a Tibetan spiritual leader (lama), for this week’s Eats in Queens newsletter.

Love the calming vibes here, but of course I was intrigued by the all-vegetarian Tibetan snacks menu, some of which I was totally unfamiliar with. Here’s a bit more detail about the foods (all are pictured in slides):

• bhatsu marku ($7): a comfort food and dessert combining chewy little nubs of flour and water + yak cheese, butter, and sugar

• droma yogurt ($6): creamy yogurt topped with honey and droma, a wild-harvested root veg from the Tibetan grasslands that’s slightly sweet, with a pleasantly starchy texture

• bhaklep ($2): traditional, dense pan-fried bread

• tsampa cake ($5): nutty, sweet, and dense; made with roasted barley flour, yak cheese, butter, and sugar

• soupy white laphing ($7): fresh strands of mung bean jelly in chili oil, with peanuts

• yellow (dry) laphing ($8): starchy noodles wrapped around spicy, chewy gluten and wai wai (crunchy ramen noodles)

The two teas pictured are goji date and honey-lemon-ginger. There are also dandan noodles, avocado toast, French fries, egg waffles, flavored yogurts, and bubble tea on the menu.

This was one of our craziest travel days as a family of four, but we ate a shocking amount of Greek food and saw quite a bit of the local sights. Athens deserves more than 1.5 days, of course, but here's how to do it if you've got limited time!
