What a pleasure to have open up around the corner from me last week—and even more so to meet the kind staff and interview the owner, a Tibetan spiritual leader (lama), for this week’s Eats in Queens newsletter.
Love the calming vibes here, but of course I was intrigued by the all-vegetarian Tibetan snacks menu, some of which I was totally unfamiliar with. Here’s a bit more detail about the foods (all are pictured in slides):
• bhatsu marku ($7): a comfort food and dessert combining chewy little nubs of flour and water + yak cheese, butter, and sugar
• droma yogurt ($6): creamy yogurt topped with honey and droma, a wild-harvested root veg from the Tibetan grasslands that’s slightly sweet, with a pleasantly starchy texture
• bhaklep ($2): traditional, dense pan-fried bread
• tsampa cake ($5): nutty, sweet, and dense; made with roasted barley flour, yak cheese, butter, and sugar
• soupy white laphing ($7): fresh strands of mung bean jelly in chili oil, with peanuts
• yellow (dry) laphing ($8): starchy noodles wrapped around spicy, chewy gluten and wai wai (crunchy ramen noodles)
The two teas pictured are goji date and honey-lemon-ginger. There are also dandan noodles, avocado toast, French fries, egg waffles, flavored yogurts, and bubble tea on the menu.
