It began at a farmers’ market, when Brown spotted apples with names like Brushy Mountain Limbertwig, Crow’s Egg, and Sheepnose. They weren’t just fruit—they were history. Many of these varieties, once beloved, had nearly vanished.

So Tom set out to find them. For decades, he’s scoured old maps, orchard ledgers, and fading family records. He’s knocked on countless doors in the Appalachian countryside, asking, “Do you remember the apples your grandparents grew?”

His persistence has paid off. To date, Brown has saved more than 1,200 lost apple varieties. Each rediscovery is like unearthing a time capsule—flavors not tasted for generations.

To keep them alive, he grafts cuttings onto new trees and sells them cheaply, often for just $15, so anyone can plant a piece of history in their own backyard.

Why does he do it?
“It’s a thrill to rediscover them,” he says. “I’m happy as a lark.”

Because of Tom Brown, forgotten apples now thrive again—and with them, the memories of the families and communities that once cherished their names.
