Swarm season is officially here! Thanks to my talented nephew, , who handbuilt this swarm box, I was able to catch this runaway bee colony.

Queen bees kick it into high gear this time of year, rapidly laying eggs and multiplying the size of their colony. Once a colony gets too large for their hive box, they’ll often leave the nest or “swarm” to find a new, larger home.

They don’t usually go far, usually within a couple miles of their original space. Sometimes they’ll find temporary housing in a nearby tree, like in this video, until they find a better-suited permanent home.

If you see a swarm on the branch of a tree, let it be. Chances are they’re looking for a new place to call home and will file out in a few days. If a new hive takes up residence in or around your home (attics, patio furniture, sheds, etc.) please call your local beekeeper rather than an exterminator. They’ll be able to safely remove the hive without harming the bees. And heck, they might even do the job for free!
