15 more days until 2 of these piggies go to the county fair 🙌.
I absolutely LOVE having pigs here... but I am exhausted from making sure the kids walk them every (almost) night.
I also can't wait to clean the dang pen!! This group of pigs has been a huge mess due to all the rain and clay dirt at the new house. A learning curve for sure.
P***y and Mercury and both about 280 lbs and very close to the max weight of 300 😬. We are monitoring their feed carefully... but not skimping on the training marshmallows ❤️

We weighed the kids 4H turkeys again today and we are pretty confident atleast 2 of the 5 will make weight to qualify for the county fair. We've tried 3x to make weight and this is the closest we've gotten.
Kinda ironic since I grow turkeys for a side gig 🤣.

A fresh round of delicious homegrown birds are now available for the public.
On Wednesday they will be put in the deep freezer after they rest.
This helps with the texture.

This butchering, I had lots of help from some friends! It went very nice and I am less exhausted than when I do it mostly solo.
Feel free to reach out for pick-up if you are local.
Also, keep in mind, it's almost time to reserve your Thanksgiving turkey with me.

Here are your next round of delicious pasture raised birds in their chicken tractor .
I have a little experiment going with a handful of "Freedom Rangers". These are a dual purpose breed I have never raised before. I am very curious to see or taste the difference and compare $.
Funny thing, this chicken tractor was initially thought up by my husband to be a mobile coop... not a meat bird tractor. BUT, life on a homestead is ever changing, and we have ended up using it for what you see now the most. It is not exactly how we would have designed a meat bird tractor... but 🤷‍♀️. It works beautifully! The birds are happy with fresh grass every day and have shelter from the elements.

Grilling season is here! If you think a whole chicken is too much, try breaking it down for faster grilling.

This skill is a must know in the kitchen 😉. Plus, whole chickens are less $ than broken down pieces.

Today was butchering day 🍗
We had some beautiful looking birds.
Pasture raised fed non-gmo feed and live a happy life right here on our little slice of land.
This was round 2 for the season. 2 more to go!

I've been over here doing my best to keep these piggies healthy for my kids 4H projects. The kids are off on an adventure so olé Mom is in charge this week.

Not only are we growing our own pasture raised, non-gmo fed chicken and turkey here, we also grow non-gmo PORK! 🤤

This year the kids named their piggies, Freddie, Mercury (lol 😆, my oldest is a fan), Porky and P***y.

Occasionally, I sell half pigs incase you are wondering. Early November is processing at Shuff's.

Heads up.... I am about 2 weeks away from a round of fresh whole chicken to offer you Folks, so keep an eye out for my post.

Today was BUSY!
I processed my very first round of meat birds on our new property.
Then- we took all 4 piggies to the Fairgrounds for their 1st weigh-in.
I am so relieved these tasks are complete ❤️
I wish I could say I'd have birds available for sale to everyone asking, but this small round was grown out specifically for .
If you are interested in purchasing my homegrown, pastured raised, Non-gmo, happy birds, then please visit them in Mt. Airy. Enjoy some yummy locally made beer while you are at it!
As my family and I get more settled here at the new place, I will start growing larger amounts of happy birds to share "farm to table" ❤️

I've got some heritage breed Thanksgiving turkeys in the incubator for you all!

These birds are comparable to wild turkeys as far as body shape and time to mature. They have smaller breasts than turkeys bred for meat.

But don't fret!, I will be getting "meat" turkeys in a couple months. You will have options when placing your holiday orders.

These eggs are a mix breed of Narragansett × Bourbon Red. All from my own birds. I've been working toward this for a couple years!
