This miracle food is coconut oil, and we have yet to find another food with as wide a variety of applications.

By now, most people probably have probably tried frying an egg in coconut oil or mixing up an all-natural body scrub with it. Really, though, the possibilities are endless—think outside the box and try these seven unusual (but super useful) ways to use coconut oil.

1. Oil pulling

It sounds counter-intuitive, but rinsing your mouth with coconut oil might actually be able to keep your mouth and teeth healthy. This practice has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, and is said to detoxify the mouth, whiten teeth, banish bad breath, and promote better oral health overall.

To try it, swish one tablespoon of coconut oil around your mouth for 15 to 20 minutes, and very carefully, spit it out in the trash. Make sure not to pour it down the drain, though—oil can stop up your pipes. Afterwards, floss and brush teeth normally.

2. DIY mascara
Skip regular black mascara, and swipe coconut oil on your lashes for a glossy look. Just dip a clean mascara wand in melted coconut oil, shake off any excess, and apply to lashes.
Bonus: Leaving this treatment on overnight will help eyelashes grow longer and stronger!

3. As a lice treatment
When your little ones come home from school with a head full of nits, don’t run out to the drugstore for some chemical treatment. Instead, grab a fine-toothed comb, apple cider vinegar, and coconut oil to get rid of them yourself.
First, rinse hair with apple cider vinegar, then comb out the nits. Coat the whole head with coconut oil, leave it on for 8 to 12 hours to smother any remaining lice, then rinse out.

4. To unstick a zipper
Don’t despair just because the zipper on your favorite sweatshirt or pair of jeans has gone faulty. Keep it from catching by applying a small amount of coconut oil (not enough to leave a grease stain!) along the teeth. It should be moving smoothly again in no time!

5. In homemade candles
Who doesn’t love lighting a fragrant candle to relax after a long day? Though it’s a lovely ritual, a candle addiction might not be very eco-friendly: Even the fanciest French candles are made with paraffin wax, a byproduct of petroleum.
Try a greener option by making your own candles out of coconut oil, beeswax, and essential oils. Get the full set of instructions here.

6. As natural deodorant
When mixed with baking soda, cornstarch, and essential oils, coconut oil transforms into powerful DIY deodorant. Simply mix together six tablespoons coconut oil, four tablespoons baking soda, four tablespoons cornstarch, and six drops of your favorite essential oil. Apply a small amount to your underarm each day for natural protection against B.O.!

7. In the bedroom
If you can cook with it, you can use it as a personal lubricant.
Yes, coconut oil in the bedroom! This gentle natural oil works well for many couples. Just test a small amount of coconut oil on the skin of your arm before you use it elsewhere. (A word to the wise: Oil-based lubricants can degrade latex and cause it to tear, so it’s best to avoid this method if you and your partner use condoms.)

Coconut oil was earlier bundled off along with “fatty” foods and considered bad for the heart. The fat in coconut is not the same as you find in cheese or steak. It contains a lot of medium chain triglycerides, which are metabolized differently and can have therapeutic effects on your skin, hair, heart and several brain disorders. There are many other uses of this wonder superfood that will really surprise you.
Coconut oil is devoid of harmful chemicals, foaming agents and is anti-bacterial in nature. Swishing it in the mouth gives the same effect as a traditional mouthwash.
Can be used as a regular moisturizer to treat dry skin, treat fly bites, remove make up and condition hair. It can also be used as wood polish for furniture at home. Consuming coconut oil can aid weight loss, lower heart disease risk and give you an energy boost.

How Can I Include Coconut Oil In My Weight Loss Diet?....
Coconut oil is naturally present in coconut meat (higher amounts in mature coconuts) and is extracted using a variety of processes. The oil is also available in solid form (known as coconut butter). Coconut milk, created by mixing grated coconut meat with water, also contains coconut oil. Coconut oil, milk and flesh (wet and dry forms) are widely included in traditional cuisines across Asia, South America and the Caribbean.

Though coconut oil has high saturated fat content, it is said to be good for weight loss. That’s because coconut oil has a uniquely high proportion (about 65%) of Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA) or Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT).

Coconut oil is also naturally sweet with a low percentage of fructose and higher percentage of glucose. Excessive fructose consumption has been linked with increase in belly fat, cholesterol, diabetes and heart disease. As per this study conducted by Lane MD at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore,US, because they are metabolized in different ways, fructose increases food intake whereas glucose suppresses food intake.

Given its unique combination of beneficial sugars and fats, coconut oil therefore, lends itself very well for inclusion in weight loss diets. Here are a few ways in which you can add the weight-loss benefits of coconut oil to your diet:

Coconut Butter:
- Add a few scoops to a smoothie for a nutty, creamy texture and tast
- Use as a naturally sweetened dip for fruit or veggies
- Spread on top of toast with a little bit of coconut oil
just eat by the spoonful

Coconut butter is also a great option for those who are looking to add nutrition and taste to a gluten-free, dairy-free diet.

With its subtle aroma and taste and silken texture, coconut milk makes for a great base for all kinds of pastes, gravies and curries. Its no surprise that coconut milk is a staple of coastal cuisine across the world.

Coconut flour is a soft flour produced from dried coconut meat. It can be used as a gluten-free, fiber-rich and protein-rich alternative to traditional grain-based flours. Try baking your crepes, cakes and bread using Coconut Flour.

Shredded Coconut:

If you are feeling lazy, shredding is the way to go. Shred a generous portion of fresh or dried coconut meat on top of your vegetable or rice preparations to add that sweet, crunchy element with all the benefits of coconut oil thrown in.

Coconut Oil:

- Coconut oil doesn’t oxidize as quickly as other oils (e.g. olive oil) and is therefore safe for cooking at high temperatures. Heat up a handful of spices (curry leaves are a traditional favorite) in a spoonful of coconut oil and add this mixture to your curries, gravies or salads to get a burst of aromatic flavor.
- Drizzle some coconut oil on your salads. Alternate with olive oil to get your supply of all the good fats your body needs
- Take a tablespoon of coconut oil twice a day around meal times. - Add hot water or herbal tea to a tablespoon or two of coconut oil in a mug. Stir it well and consume regularly.
- Take some lemon juice in a glass. Add a teaspoon of organic coconut oil and fill the glass with warm water and stir it well. Sip it slowly, early in the morning on daily basis.
- Mix 2 tablespoons of green tea leaves, hot water and coconut oil in a glass. Steep it for few minutes and strain the tea. Sip it slowly and regularly.
