Riley's Acres

Riley's Acres 2016 marked our transition to Michigan, and in 2019, we moved to Six Lakes. We are building our dream one day at a time.

Are you troubled with aphids?

Grab a few handfuls of tomato leaves, around two cups, and toss them in a food processor or blender. Pulse them a few times and then put them in a quart jar. Fill the rest of the jar with water, put the lid on the jar and give it a good shake. After 24 hours, strain the chopped leaves and put the resulting liquid in a spray bottle.

Voila!

You’ve got a natural aphid insecticide. The naturally occurring alkaloids found in tomatoes are toxic to those tiny green bugs, but the spray is safe to use around people and pets.

You’ll want to mist infected plants well, especially the undersides of the leaves where the little pests like to hide.

Everyone laughed at me for painting rocks to look like strawberries, but found out that if you put them around your berry plants and bushes before the fruits appear, the birds will peck the red rocks. They hate pecking super hard things so they will leave the fruit when it appears. No crows. 🍓🍓🍓

Maintaining a significant sized yard has been an ongoing struggle, but we acquired a brush hog 2 years ago to help us overcome this challenge. Alex has dedicated a significant amount of time to mowing the lawn, and I have made it a point to distribute tick-repelling granules throughout the yard. Despite our efforts, ticks have been a persistent problem this year. What are some tick-repelling methods that you have practiced in your own outdoor spaces?
