At Southport Spices, we believe our customers deserve honest answers about the products they bring into their homes and kitchens.
We occasionally receive questions about how spices and herbs are treated for food safety before reaching store shelves. While irradiation is one food safety treatment used within portions of the spice industry, it is not the only method. Depending on the product, spices and herbs may also undergo steam treatment or ETO treatment to help reduce harmful bacteria and contaminants while maintaining product safety and quality.
Like most commercial spice suppliers in the United States and Canada, our spices, herbs, and teas receive a food safety treatment designed to reduce harmful bacteria, mold, yeast, insects, and other contaminants that can naturally occur in agricultural products grown outdoors around the world.
The primary treatments used in the spice industry include:
• Steam Treatment
Spices are exposed to high-temperature steam to help reduce microbial contamination while maintaining flavor and quality. This is one of the most common methods used for herbs and spices.
• ETO (Ethylene Oxide) Treatment
ETO is a sterilization process used in portions of the spice industry to help eliminate bacteria, pathogens, insects, and microbial contamination. The process is regulated and monitored for food safety compliance.
• Irradiation
Some pepper and chile products within the spice industry may be treated with irradiation, which uses controlled energy waves to help reduce pathogens and improve product safety and stability. The process does not make food radioactive.
Different spices and growing regions may require different treatment methods depending on moisture levels, microbial risks, import requirements, and product characteristics.
At Southport Spices, we source through reputable suppliers that operate under recognized food safety, organic, and quality assurance programs, including USDA Organic certification, QAI, Oregon Tilth, SQF food safety standards, and regulatory oversight from agencies such as the FDA, USDA, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
Our focus remains on providing clean, high-quality products while maintaining the food safety standards expected throughout the industry.
We also believe questions should always be welcomed. Curiosity about food, sourcing, and safety is a good thing, and we appreciate customers who ask thoughtful questions and employees who continue learning every day alongside us.
Thank you for supporting Southport's small businesses!
