This is reality. Animal husbandry is not all rainbows and butterflies. Homesteading is not frolicking in pastures in a sundress. It’s not making butter from scratch in a perfectly clean kitchen. It’s not cuddling cute calves all day.

Sometimes it’s pulling a calf in a lightning storm.

Sometimes it’s holding a 1,000-pound cow sternal with your legs on a downhill slope while you wait for your vet.

Sometimes it’s working for days to keep an animal alive and spending thousands on treatments and vet bills…only for the cow to have hemorrhagic bowel syndrome, with absolutely nothing anyone could have done to prevent it or save her.

Sometimes it’s being the one to put that animal down because there are no more options left.

Sometimes it’s having to use your hands to put sugar on a prolapse and push it back into the pig.

And sometimes, it’s watching a goat that seemed fine one day die the next. Then opening her up to find out she had a punctured trachea we could not see that likely caused pulmonary edema. Then the stress of fireworks caused her to rapidly decline due to her compromised health.

Burying a goat wasn’t on my list of things I wanted to accomplish today. But we are grateful for the 4.5 months we got with Brooke 🖤🤍🤎

A2/A2 Brown Swiss/Jersey Bottle Calf Heifer.

Eevee is looking for new pastures. She is a 3 week old.

Dam is an A2/A2 Registered Jersey. Doing 6-7 gallons 3 weeks fresh on her third lactation.

Eevee will not be a “grass-fed” cow - ever. Proper feeding will be required to keep her healthy long term. With the brown Swiss, she will be on the taller side.

A bitter sweet day on the farm. After 5 years of hosting Wild at Heart Co-Op I had to make the decision to stop hosting. This group is the very reason I have met some of my very best friends and watching so many of these sweet kiddos grow up over the last few years as been an absolute privilege. It may be the end of an organized group, but it’s not the end of building these relationships! We went out with a huge bang with Field Day 2025 🏆
