Major Climate Emergency ‼️ 🚨
floods the Earth

July in Central Florida is an ideal time to explore growing heat-tolerant crops that thrive in hot, humid climates.

It's also a great month to start pumpkins for an early fall harvest. Just be sure to manage pests and choose varieties proven to perform well in Florida. If you have a target harvest date, such as Halloween or Thanksgiving, pay close attention to the days to maturity listed for each pumpkin variety you're considering.

Late July through August is also when many Florida gardeners start seeds for tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, tomatillos, and ground cherries to have healthy, strong transplants ready for fall planting.

If you're taking a break from vegetable production this summer, consider planting cover crops such as sunn h**p, cowpeas, or French marigolds to protect and enrich your soil until the fall season.

🥦 As temperatures start to cool, plants that prefer temperate conditions thrive, and October is when most Florida gardeners make the full transition to cool-season crops.

☀️ Some quick-growing warm-season crops can still be seeded or transplanted now, depending on how many days they need to reach maturity.

📅 This is the time to learn your average first frost date, understand the cold tolerance of the crops you’re planting, and check their days to maturity. This will help you know whether you still have time to direct sow or start frost-sensitive plants before any risk of frost arrives.

🌱 If you’re still hoping to grow warm-season crops this fall, look for starter plants or varieties with shorter days to harvest, especially if you live in a part of Central Florida that experiences frost earlier. Alternatively, you can wait until your chance of frost has passed and plant those crops again sometime in February or March.

🌡️ Finally, keep a close eye on the predicted temperatures. Some cool-season crops may struggle if we have higher-than-normal temperatures early in the season, so being patient and planting them a little later when it is consistently cooler will set them up for success.
