Queens! 🤦 Just when you think you were a step ahead and understand what they are doing the hive decides to make you really work for it.
This is a queen castle which means it is where we put grafted eggs for a hive to make queen cells. There is no queen in this hive when we start and that makes the bees create one. A hive has to be balanced. A queen has to have workers and workers have to have a queen.
That is great except sometimes they do something we didn't see. They create a queen cell somewhere we don't see instead of using the cells we provide.
Hives operate on contingency plans. Usually they have at least one spare cell not in use but ready to use when needed. They choose several and when the first queen hatches she destroys the rest or if multiple hatch they fight for the top spot.
Anyway, we missed one and she is somewhere in this hive. We know because there are fresh eggs being laid and there is not supposed to be a queen in this box.
We cannot make new queens in this situation with one floating around in here. So the hunt was on to find her, rehome her in a different hive and place a graft bar in this specific box.
Spoiler alert, an hour later and searching frame by frame the where's Waldo search for the elusive queen is 0 to this beekeeper, 1 to the queen.

So true! While I haven't heard all variations I have heard many from the hive and it is amazing the communication they have.
At a vendor event a while ago I was talking to a sound therapist and she pointed out that the sound wave from hives is one of the most healing. I don't understand much about hertz or megahertz but it was a fascinating conversation.
The similar comparison would be music. The undertone to beats and vocals can either soothe or aggravate a person. Bees are similar.
Either way they are fascinating.

The beginning.
Who knew when JJ decided to get "just a couple hives" in 2021 that we would end up where we are.
He mentioned it in passing and I told him yea hun have fun. It's your hobby, I support you and go for it. That became more and more and now I am just as involved(he still does a majority of the work).
The benefits are immeasurable and I am grateful for this little adventure he took us on.
Yes, he was laying on the ground enjoying them.
Yes, the bees love him(most of the time)
Yes, I wear the suit and no, he rarely wears anything resembling safety apparel
Yes, I am working on a book about the adventures and misadventures we have had
