This is the sauce that started Garam Goddess, rooted in my mother’s recipe and built with a lot of heart (and cumin!!).

In early 2021, we moved to the Hudson Valley as new parents to stay safe and isolated. I had two babies (human and business) and big plans for Garam Goddess while on maternity leave — often feeling frustrated that I couldn’t “get as much done.” (So many lessons learned during this time.)

I did my first farmers market in 2022, and it felt huge! It wasn’t just about making a delicious recipe anymore — I had to learn to sell, create a compelling table display, figure out a POS system, and schlep my tent, table, and gear to the market.

Every market, store, and person who stopped to taste Garam Goddess ever since has become part of a new community — one that welcomed my little kitchen experiments and gave them a home. Along the way, I learned what it really means to build a brand, design packaging that tells a story, and share the nostalgic flavors of India in every bottle.

Through it all, the core hasn’t changed — bold, flavorful, and unapologetically fiery. Being a mom has only made me more resilient, creative, and focused on what matters.!

In 2019, I went to the NYC Hot Sauce Expo. Everywhere I looked were dudes in leather vests and beards — most sauces were all about extreme heat and pain. I had brought some samples of my 1st sauce recipe with me to share and get some feedback. In this crowd, I felt out of place in some ways and also felt confident that there was space for something flavorful, feminine, and fiery.

Garam Goddess was official.

And then Covid hit… annnnddd we found out we were pregnant!

It was overwhelming. Every day felt unpredictable, and making sauces became a little island of control and creativity — a way to cope, focus my energy, and see cooking in a new light.

My husband, Rob, jumped in to help — taste-testing, bottling, and keeping the chaos manageable — while I learned what it really meant to sell a packaged food product and share something I loved.

Those first batches went to friends, then friends of friends, and eventually strangers who just wanted heat with flavor. Each bottle carried a little more confidence, creativity, and resilience than the last.

Five years later, that same curiosity and care still runs through every bottle.

Hi, I’m Ekta — the maker behind Garam Goddess.

My son and my business both turn 5 this year — they’ve grown side by side.

What started as late-night sauce experiments has turned into something much bigger — a way to share the flavors I grew up with and the heat I can’t live without.

In 5 years, Garam Goddess has gone from a few hand-labeled bottles to shelves in local stores and markets — all powered by curiosity, community, and a serious love for spice. 🌶️

is that happy place. The team, led by Varsha and Viraj, create the coziest atmosphere and their menu and drinks are genius! 💯
