In memory of George Richard Darnell

Corporal George Richard Darnell served his country during the Vietnam War with the United States Army. Assigned to the 54th Signal Battalion, 1st Signal Brigade, he played an important role in supporting military communications and operations in South Vietnam.🇺🇲

Born on July 24, 1944, in Scarsdale, Westchester County, New York, Darnell answered his nation's call to service during a challenging period in American history. As a Wheel Vehicle Repairman, his work helped keep essential military equipment operational, contributing to the effectiveness of those serving in the field.🫡

On June 9, 1967, at the age of 22, Corporal Darnell lost his life in South Vietnam as the result of a non-hostile incident classified as an accidental homicide. Though his death did not occur in combat, his sacrifice remains part of the enduring cost of war and military service.💜

Today, he is remembered with honor and gratitude. His name is permanently inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., at Panel 21E, Line 77, ensuring that his service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

May we remember Corporal George Richard Darnell, his dedication to duty, and the life he gave in service to his country.,🇺🇲

My Dad Leif M Jonassen (pictured on the right) died from Agent Orange April 3, 2025, and he will be inured at Arlington National Cemetery June 29, 2026. This photo shows, in my Dad’s written words, “Removing guns and radios from helicopter. Picture was taken from chopper coming in to pick us up after getting shot down. That is mud from bullets hitting the ground in front of us while we were flying 4’ or 5’ off the ground firing at the North Viet.”

For more than twenty years, Captain Jon Thomas Busch's family lived with uncertainty.

They knew he had not returned from war.

But they did not know where he rested.

Born on May 7, 1941, in Columbus, Ohio, Jon Busch served as a Tactical Fighter Radar Pilot with the 389th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 366th Tactical Fighter Wing, 7th Air Force. During the Vietnam War, he flew dangerous combat missions over hostile territory, knowing that every flight carried tremendous risk.

On June 8, 1967, his aircraft was lost over North Vietnam. Captain Busch was listed as Missing in Action after an air crash, and for years his fate remained unknown.

The war ended, decades passed, and families continued searching for answers.

Then, in 1988, more than twenty-one years after his loss, his remains were finally recovered.

For many families of the missing, closure never comes. For the Busch family, the recovery of Jon's remains brought an end to years of uncertainty, while ensuring that his sacrifice would be properly honored and remembered.

Today, Captain Jon Thomas Busch is memorialized at the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial and honored on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., Panel 21E, Line 73.

His story is a reminder that the cost of war does not end when the fighting stops. Sometimes it continues for years in the hearts of those waiting for answers.

Though he was lost for decades, he was never forgotten.

"Vietnam forged warriors who learned to stand tall in hell, wading through mud, jungle, and fear while carrying the weight of duty on their shoulders. Even when the world turned its back on their sacrifice, they never forgot the brothers beside them or the mission ahead. Their courage, resilience, and sacrifice will never be forgotten. 🇺🇸"

Welcome home, brothers.

There is a name etched into the black granite of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial that represents a life, a family, and a sacrifice that time cannot erase.🇺🇸

That name is John Roland Burke.

Born on February 6, 1944, in Clearwater, Florida, John grew up in a community that would one day mourn the loss of one of its own. As a Marine Corps Assaultman assigned to Headquarters & Service Company, 1st Battalion, 26th Marines, he served in one of the war's most dangerous combat environments.

On June 6, 1967, in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam, Corporal Burke was killed by an explosive device during hostile action.

He was 23 years old.🕊️

Twenty-three.

An age filled with plans, ambitions, and possibilities. Yet like so many young Americans of his generation, John's future was interrupted by war.💜

Today, his story survives not through headlines or history books, but through remembrance. Through the family members who carried his memory. Through the visitors who stop at his name on the Wall. Through the quiet moments when people reflect on the price of freedom.

Corporal Burke now rests at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park in Clearwater, Florida, not far from the place he once called home.

His journey ended in Vietnam, but his memory never did.🫡

May we continue to honor the young Marine who gave everything he had to give.

Never forgotten.
Always remembered.
