Betty's Business

Betty's Business Betty's Business is a cottage food producer
selling whatever Betty’s got since 2016. I started cooking also when I was very young. By 2050, we will all be toast.

I started gardening with my Mom at age 4 and I’ve probably put seeds into the ground to grow food every year since. As an adult, I started to experiment with more of my own recipes. As I traveled, I learned how to incorporate foods from other cultures. I served lots of meals to lots of people for one reason or another. People constantly told me I should run a restaurant or bakery. But I had three

children and I needed a secure income. When I retired after thirty years of teaching high school Spanish, I started to think of how I could l make food for people. I didn’t want to be permanently tied down to a restaurant. Then I learned about the cottage food license from the state of Minnesota. It allows me to have a flexible business that is dedicated to serving my neighbors healthy, tasty food at affordable prices. The Climate Crisis
The only way to halt the catastrophe awaiting our planet is to stop using fossil fuels NOW. I believe personal choices matter. Choosing the right businesses to support is one way you can lower your carbon footprint. And I’m sure Betty’s Business is the most sustainable business in town.
• Transportation supplied by my wheelbarrow and my Schwinn.
• Solar energy for food processing.
• Reused/Reusable containers.
• No pesticides or herbicides.
• Fertilizer from compost I produce on site.
• As much as possible, I grow my own plants from seed delivered by USPS.
• 50% of all proceeds go to Second Harvest Heartland.
• My pay what you want policy allows everyone access to healthy, tasty food at a price they can afford. My philosophy is that you shouldn’t have to be filthy rich to enjoy good food.

I'm grateful to Courtney of the Wild Bird Alliance for bringing me a songbird nest for my urban farm. The objective is to revive the population of insect-eating birds so we won't need so many pesticides. I'm hoping for a family of the Eastern Bluebirds https://www.wildfarmalliance.org/

I ❤️my red wrigglers. They take my kitchen scraps and turn them into the highest quality fertilizer you can get. They are what makes it possible for me to grow all the fruits and vegetables I produce on my city lot. First event of the season is my plant and seed sale running June 4-8. Plants are in reused containers with compost produced on my lot which has been organic for 18 years.
