Lettuce options available today: tight, sweet Buttercrunch and Green Summer Crisp heads (both are well suited to burgers and sandwiches) and pretty Red Salanova (limited). Also a moderate supply of our washed baby salad mix. To any of these just add in tomato, cucumber, onion and bell pepper and you’ve got a delicious salad!

Our young laying hens are always happy for garden greens. They’ll go right out on pasture as soon as they are big enough that they can’t run through the fence. Our meat birds are big enough and have access to plenty of pasture grasses along with their organic grain. We lost a lot of our old laying hens earlier this year to some sort of predator, maybe a fox, as they just kept disappearing. And we had something get into our meat chickens a few weeks ago that killed a bunch of them but didn’t carry them off. Maybe a weasel, mink or raccoon. Raising food isn’t easy, whether it’s dealing with weather conditions, blights, insects and pests in garden crops, or predators, sickness, injuries etc in livestock. Farming is tough but can be very rewarding if you stay resilient. We’re in it for the long haul.
