For a full ceremonial cacao experience, a dose of 40-50 grams per person is commonly used, with 42 grams often cited as a standard amount.
However, the ideal dosage is personal and can vary based on individual sensitivity, intention, and experience with cacao.
Recommended Dosage Guidelines
The amount of cacao you use depends largely on your desired experience.
Intention Recommended GramsNotesDaily wellness/focus 10–25 grams, A lighter amount for a gentle energy boost and mood enhancement, similar to a strong coffee without the jitters.
Meditation/Creative work 25–35 grams, a medium dose that provides deeper relaxation and introspection, ideal for personal ritual or yoga.
Full ceremonial experience 40–50 grams, This higher dose is for deep emotional and spiritual work, enhancing heart-opening effects and introspection.
Important Considerations
Listen to your body: There is no single "correct" ceremonial dose; personal intuition is key. Beginners should start with a smaller amount (around 10-15g) to gauge their body's reaction to the theobromine and other compounds.
Medical conditions: Consult a healthcare provider before using ceremonial doses if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a heart condition, low blood pressure, or are taking antidepressants or other medications, as cacao can interact with these conditions and medications.
Potential side effects: Consuming more than 50-55 grams can lead to discomfort, such as headaches, nausea, or heart palpitations for some individuals.
Preparation: Use a kitchen scale for precision in dosing. Chop the cacao into small pieces and mix with hot water or plant-based milk (dairy can inhibit some benefits) at a temperature of around 70°C (do not use boiling water).
