The Biblical Principle of Bikkurim, or “Firstfruits,” and what it means according to the Torah

In the Torah, Bikkurim is the idea of giving our very best and our “first” to God. Back in ancient Israel, people would plant crops, take care of them, and then, when the harvest time came, they’d collect the first and best fruits or crops as an offering to God. They didn’t keep it for themselves; instead, they offered it back to show their gratitude and trust.

Think of it like this: Imagine you worked really hard on growing a beautiful apple tree. When it finally grows big and strong, the first apples that ripen are like the “firstfruits.” Giving these first apples to God shows that you know He’s the one who helped you grow them. It’s a way of saying, “Thank You for providing for me, and I trust You’ll keep taking care of me!”

The Principle of Bikkurim also teaches us something super important: God wants us to remember that everything we have – our food, our talents, and even our time – is a gift from Him. By giving the first and best, we’re putting Him first in our lives and showing faith that He’ll keep blessing us with what we need.

So, even if we’re not farmers, we can practice Bikkurim by giving God our best efforts, the first part of our time, or the first of anything we receive. It’s a way to say “thank you” and to keep our hearts connected to Him, knowing that He is our Provider. Isn’t that beautiful?

Shalom,
Yoshi

Hi!
I’m Yoshua, and I’m super excited to tell you about my new business, Yoshua’s Pantry! I’m only eight, but I’m learning all about how to start a business and do it the right way, like my Mom and Dad taught me with Messianic Torah principles.

Yoshua’s Pantry has all kinds of special things that come straight from farms and people who care about what they make. We have big, juicy Medjool Dates from Upington Region in The Northern Cape, Fresh cold-pressed olive oil from De Doorns Region, Cape Town Western Cape, Raw honey that’s just so sweet and yummy, and challah bread we bake every Friday for Shabbat. I want everything we sell to help people feel good and bring something special to their home.

My whole first salary is going to be an offering to YHVH (God) because I believe He is my Provider and will keep my work going. I’m learning that when you give back first, you’re blessed to keep going strong!

We’re making sure everything is done in a way that’s friendly to people and the planet. And guess what? I get to be a CEO and a kid at the same time! Thank you for checking out Yoshua’s Pantry.
