My boy's first Comic Con 🕷️❤️ Comic Con Africa
Today was a big one. My son's very first Comic Con. He's only four, so we knew we had a short window — arrived at 9, three hours on the clock — but we made every minute count. And we both went as our favourite hero: two Spider-Men. 🕷️
What a place for a little one to experience for the first time. The costumes, the shops, the whole world of it — his face the entire time made it worth every cent. As an experience, it's a full 5/5.
And here's the Kief Deal part: there's a Takealot stall right by the kids' zone with everything 60 to 70% off. So after we filmed the food stalls for you all, I let my boy loose to pick a sick toy:
🧸 He chose the Bluey plane
🎄 The wife grabbed a Nightmare Before Christmas Lego set
🪖 And I got an Imperial mask (had to)

Is Comic Con Africa food a ripoff? 🎮 Here are the real prices
Comic Con Africa is on (Thursday to Sunday), and the big question everyone asks is: is the food ridiculously expensive? I took the family through on day one to find out — and honestly, you can relax.
It's R300 a ticket at the gate, and once you're in there are somewhere around 50 to 80 food stalls, with something for every budget:
🥞 Pancakes — R12 each (yep, R12!) ⭐⭐⭐⭐
🥟 2x chicken bao buns + chips — R160 for the two of us to share ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (there's a whole anime stall doing ramen and sushi tacos too)
🍦 Sola-pop ice cream — R30
🍩 4 mini doughnuts — R45 (tip: one doughnut shop does a half portion, where most make you buy the full one)
🌭 Chips and a sausage from around R50 · 💧 water R24
So no, it's not all pricey or huge portions — from R50 snacks to R160 meals, and the queues move fast.
The experience itself? A full 5/5. The costumes, the shops, the whole atmosphere — super cool fun for the whole family.

The hidden gem of Dullstroom 💧🏕️ Trout River Falls
A new Kief Stays — and what a place to start. Trout River Falls is a family-run lodge just outside Dullstroom (10–20 min out of town), so you're surrounded by nature instead of the tourist crowds.
💧 A genuinely stunning waterfall, a 5-minute walk from your room
🛺 A golf cart collects you at your car and takes your bags right to your door
🎣 Fly fishing — 3 dams and a 2km river with trophy trout (catch & release, R350 per person)
🐾 Pet friendly, with breakfast and pizzas on the weekends
💰 The room we stayed in was R4,000 for two people, two nights over a weekend.
My honest take: venue and waterfall views 5/5, the room a solid 4/5 — all your amenities, beautifully done.

8 pizzas + a free birthday pizza for my boy's birthday lunch 🍕🎉
Ordered from Petrone's in Dowerglen a day ahead with my collection time, and it was ready fresh and hot, right on the dot. They even threw in a free birthday pizza for my boy 🎂 (and yes — the Kief Deal Bandits made the spread 👀).
Taste and experience: 5/5. Zero party stress. Paid full price, as always.

R49 for a burger, chips AND a drink — at a golf club 🍔🍺 Tee Bar & Grill, Dowerglen
Let me put this one in perspective for you. At most pubs, a single b**r costs you around R49. At the Tee Bar & Grill — the restaurant at Dowerglen Golf Club — that R49 gets you a fresh beef burger, chips, AND a b**r, w**e or c***r. The whole meal and a drink, for the price of one drink anywhere else.
And the setting is something else — Dowerglen Golf Club is exclusive, beautiful and scenic, the kind of place you just want to sit with a cold one. The special runs every Tuesday, all day, so you can even take the family through in the evening.
Honest verdict, as always:
🍔 The burger — properly lekka, especially at this price
🍺 Plus your drink included

VIP cinema from R87.50 in Bedfordview 🎬 NuMetro
Remember when drive-throughs were everywhere? Then they slowly died out. The same thing's happening to cinemas — closing down, downsizing, because we're all streaming now. And streaming's comfy… but honestly, nothing beats a proper big-screen movie. Especially like this one.
This is NuMetro VIP in Bedfordview, and it's a whole different experience:
🍸 A full bar with waiter service
🛋️ Proper leather recliner lazy-boys
🍔 You can order a meal and tell them exactly what time to bring it to your chair — it arrives mid-movie
It used to cost hundreds. Now, VIP is R175 — but here's the money-saver: with a rewards card it drops right down. We used my wife's Nedbank card and paid R87.50 (about £4 / $5.40) — and Nedbank lets you buy multiple tickets on one card, so you can sort the whole family in one transaction. 👌
Honest heads-up: the other partners on the board (ABSA Rewards, Edgars Club, Momentum Multiply from R70, Sanlam Reality) also have deals, but I haven't checked their terms — so check your own card, they vary. And if your bank isn't on NuMetro's list, they might do discounts with Ster-Kinekor instead — worth a look.

The bunny chow that changed my mind 🍛 Modern Tailors, Rosebank
I'll be honest with you — I usually don't love Indian food from restaurants. It's often overpriced for what you get, small portions, and too much bony stew instead of proper meat. So I went into this one a sceptic. Modern Tailors changed my mind completely.
It's in The Zone at Rosebank, and their weekly lunch special board (11am–4pm) is one of the best I've seen. But here's the magic: when you order a bunny chow, they bake your bread FRESH, to order, in these old coffee tins. I've never seen that anywhere — most places use bread baked that morning, or the day before. Freshly baked bunny bread on the spot is a genuine 10/10 experience.
We went in as a family. Matt had the lamb bunny (R165), I had the chicken bunny (R115), and my wife had the daily lamb curry. Proper portions, real tender meat, not a bone in sight — and every single one was a 9/10. The curry's rich, the bread's unreal.
A tip: on Thursdays it's "Bunny & B**r" — you get a free Devil's Peak draught with any bunny chow. They've also got daily curry specials, Friday biryani, and a happy hour. As always, we paid our own bill and showed the slip. 🧾
For Rosebank — one of the priciest spots in Joburg — this is a genuine find, and I'd highly recommend it.
