DEVELOPING SMALL-SCALE FARMING BUSINESSES

Umoya Foods develops high-quality, nutritious dried food products by working closely with the farmers who produce our crops.
We share our revenues with our farmers.

We are working on innovative technologies to allow smaller farmers to manufacture on the farm. Farmers benefit from involvement in the production. You can be sure the ingredients are farm fresh and the nutrition is locked in!

They’re helping us remember the crops that matter and you need to know about them.

Through our partnership with EcoProducts ™️ we’re supporting the women who harvest baobab and helping keep this remarkable heritage fruit part of our food system, including in our Thrive Baobab.

Baobab has been part of African food traditions for generations and for good reason. The fruit naturally contains fibre, vitamin C and other nutrients, making it a pretty impressive little addition to the diet.

Supporting heritage foods isn’t only about creating a more nutritious food system. It’s also about creating one that values biodiversity, local knowledge and the livelihoods of the people who grow and harvest what’s around us.

So… we went back to the shelves.
And it got us thinking.

Once you look a little closer, you start noticing just how many of the foods on our shelves are made up of refined grains, added sugars, flavours, colours and very long ingredient lists.

And then there are crops like sorghum, millet and amaranth, crops that have been grown and eaten across Africa for generations.

So we started wondering: how did we get so far away from some of the foods that have always been around us?

And that’s exactly why this conversation matters.

We believe our indigenous and heritage crops deserve more than a mention during Heritage Month. They deserve a place in the foods we eat, the products we make and the future we’re building.

We roamed around the retail aisles, and we realised something needed to change.

We weren’t seeing enough of the incredible crops that grow across our continent crops that have been part of African food cultures for generations.

And it got us thinking: what would happen if we made more room for them?

So this Heritage Month, we’re taking a closer look at the crops we choose, where they come from, and why we believe they deserve a bigger place on our shelves and on our plates.

First up: Sorghum.

A crop with deep roots in Africa, and one that we’re proud to use in our products.

Swipe through to find out why sorghum made the cut.

What African crop do you think deserves more attention?

Hello, September.

Since 2016, we’ve been on a mission to remind communities of what real food tastes like and how it should make you feel.

As we celebrate Heritage Month, we’re pausing to reflect on the history of our incredible indigenous grains, what motivated us to begin this journey, and how far we’ve come in encouraging communities to be more intentional about the foods they eat.

But perhaps the most important question is:

What are we doing to ensure the next generation knows about the crops that have nourished our communities for generations?

This month, we’ll be opening the pages on our ancient grains sharing their stories, where they come from, their nutritional value and the communities keeping them alive.

Breakfast shouldn’t require a dictionary to understand what’s in it.

That’s why we keep things familiar, ingredients you know and a breakfast bowl that your body can get on with.

What’s in your breakfast bowl this morning?

🎬 How They Survived Climate Change

Last week we asked, “What if the rain didn’t come?”

Turns out, some crops have been quietly preparing for that question for generations.

Sorghum. Millet. Ancient grains.

They’ve been growing in African soils long before climate resilience became a buzzword.

The best part? We get to enjoy these incredible crops again through everyday meals like our Ancient Grains Porridge. Not because they’re the latest trend, but because they deserve a place back on our tables.

And if one day there really is a documentary about how communities adapted to climate change, we hope part of that story is about the better food choices we made today, choosing resilient crops, supporting local farmers, and rediscovering the grains that have been with us all along.

Who knew breakfast could have such a good plot twist? 😅

"It has no nutritional value."

We've all heard someone say it. But what does "nutritional value" actually mean?

Nutrition is more than just calories. It's the vitamins, minerals, fibre, protein, and naturally occurring plant compounds that help your body function at its best.

Our products are made with nutrient-rich ingredients like amaranth, millet, sorghum, baobab, and beetroot, ingredients that have nourished communities for generations and continue to offer exceptional nutritional benefits today.

Over the next few days, we'll be unpacking each ingredient in our range, exploring its nutritional value, the role it plays in supporting your wellbeing, and why it's earned a place in our products.

Because when you understand what's in your food, you're empowered to make better choices for your health.

Join us as we unpack the goodness, one ingredient at a time.

Your body reads ingredient lists, too.

Have you ever met someone called Sodium Benzoate? 🤔

Yes, we have, but we would rather have probably not.🙃

It's a common preservative used to help extend the shelf life of many packaged foods. While it's approved for use in many countries, we simply choose a different approach.

We'd rather introduce your body to amaranth, sorghum, millet, and baobab than a long list of additives.

Because we believe food should be built around ingredients that nourish, not just ingredients that preserve.

Real ingredients. Ancient grains. No added preservatives.
