I have a friend who is on government sponsorship, and one month there was a strong rumor that HELSB money was coming, and even more was expected the next day.
So he started planning like everything had already landed.
The first thing he did was buy the Macowens Starter Pack:
5kg Rice
3kg Macaroni
1 Tray of Eggs
He said he was securing his basics early so he wouldn’t struggle when the “big money” dropped.
Soon after, a partial allowance came in. It wasn’t the full amount, just a portion, but in his mind it was only the beginning.
That same day, he started spending freely, saying the rest was still coming the next day. He went out, enjoyed himself, and even spent money on his girlfriend, fully confident that everything would balance out later.
And that he would buy more food.
We warned him, but he was calm.
Then the next day came.
No second payment.
No update.
No explanation.
Just silence.
That’s when reality started to settle in.
He slowly became quiet, sitting in the room looking at his Macowens Starter Pack like it was the only stable thing in his life.
After a long pause, he just said softly:
> “At least I bought food first…”
From that day, his whole attitude changed. The rice, macaroni, and eggs became what carried him through the month while everything else was uncertain.
And somehow, that one decision ended up being the reason he didn’t struggle completely.
