One of the most common questions new pig farmers ask is:
“When is the best time to separate piglets from their mother?”

The truth is, weaning too early or too late can cost you money and affect pig growth.
Let’s break it down:

✅ The Ideal Weaning Age

The recommended age to wean piglets is 6–8 weeks (42–56 days).
At this stage:

Piglets are strong enough to eat solid feed.

Their immune system is better developed.

They handle stress more effectively.

⚠️ Risks of Weaning Too Early (3–4 weeks)

Piglets remain weak and stressed.

High risk of diarrhea and mortality.

Poor growth since their digestive system isn’t ready for solid feed alone.

Increased costs on feed and treatment.

⚠️ Risks of Delayed Weaning (10+ weeks)

Piglets continue sucking, which stresses the sow.

The sow loses too much body condition, delaying her return to heat.

Reduced productivity due to longer intervals between litters.

📝 Practical Tips for Smooth Weaning

1. Start creep feeding early – Introduce solid feed at 2 weeks so piglets adjust before separation.

2. Wean in groups – Keep piglets in small groups to minimize stress.

3. Provide a clean, warm, and dry pen – A comfortable environment reduces stress and disease risk.

4. Ensure constant access to fresh water – Hydration is crucial after separation.

5. Support the sow – After weaning, provide good quality feed so she recovers quickly and returns to heat.

📌 Key Takeaway

For maximum piglet growth and farm profitability, wean piglets at 6–8 weeks.

Too early = poor growth and health problems.

Too late = wasted time and stressed sows.

People doubting that 7months pigs can’t do 100kg is evident that most pig farms are doing the wrong things.

If your pigs are not doing 10-25kg weight gain monthly, then you need to check your breed, Your feed, your manner of feeding and your management.

We feed our Pigs very well and not just very well, they eat ad libutum too and have access to constant clean water and are dewormed monthly and under good management conditions, pigs will hardly get sick thereby increasing conversion rate.

So, if you’re doubting our results, please check your farm practices and make the necessary adjustments.

HOW TO MAKE MONEY MASSIVELY IN PIG 🐖 FARMING

Profiting massively in pig farming requires a combination of strategic planning, efficient operations, smart marketing, and continuous innovation. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you turn pig farming into a highly profitable business:

🧠 1. Start with a Business Plan

Market Research: Identify demand in your region (meat processors, local markets, restaurants, exporters).

Business Model: Decide if you want to do:

Farrow-to-finish (complete lifecycle)

Piglet production (sell weaners)

Fattening pigs for pork

Breeding for resale

Budget: Include costs for housing, feed, medication, breeding stock, labor, and marketing.

🐖 2. Choose the Right Breed

High-yield, fast-growing, disease-resistant breeds are essential.

Landrace, Large White, Duroc, or hybrids

Match breed to your climate and market demand (e.g. leanness vs fat content).

🏠 3. Build Efficient and Scalable Housing

Design for:

Ventilation: Prevent disease

Drainage: Prevent waterlogging and infections

Expansion: Plan for growth

Use locally sourced but durable materials to reduce costs.

🌾 4. Master Feeding – Cut Costs Without Sacrificing Quality

Feed is 60–70% of costs — reduce it wisely:

Use formulated feed for each stage (piglets, growers, finishers)

Supplement with agricultural by-products: cassava peels, maize bran, brewery waste

Consider on-farm feed production

💉 5. Implement a Strong Health & Biosecurity Program

Routine vaccinations, deworming, and vet check-ups

Isolate new pigs before introducing them to the
the
Maintain strict hygiene and limit visitor access

📊 6. Track Metrics Religiously

Monitor:

Daily weight gain

Feed conversion ratio (FCR)

Mortality rate

Breeding success rate

Profit per pig

🧬 7. Breeding for Profit

Use artificial insemination for better genetics

Have a well-managed breeding calendar

Sell quality piglets to other farms for extra revenue

📈 8. Diversify Revenue Streams

Sell manure as organic fertilizer

Offer consulting or training if you're experienced

Start value-added products: pork sausages, smoked pork, bacon

Breed-to-sell model for new farmers

📢 9. Develop a Strong Sales & Marketing Strategy

Secure contract buyers (hotels, processors, restaurants)

Sell directly at the gate or online for better margins

Build a brand for quality pork (e.g. organic, grass-fed, etc.)

Leverage social media and local radio to attract buyers

📦 10. Scale Wisely and Reinvest Profits

Don’t scale too fast. Use profits to:

Expand housing

Improve genetics

Build feed processing capacity

Avoid debt-heavy expansion unless there's a guaranteed market

💡 Bonus Tips

Join or form cooperatives for shared resources and better market access.

Look into government or NGO grants and subsidies.

PRACTICAL TIPS ON FEEDING PIGS TO INCREASE THEIR WEIGHT EFFICIENCY: 🐷🐖

✅ Use High-Quality, Balanced Feed

Starter (up to 30 kg): 18–22% protein

Grower (30–60 kg): 16–18% protein

Finisher (60–100+ kg): 12–16% protein, higher energy for fat buildup

Ensure the feed has the right mix of energy (carbohydrates), protein, vitamins, and minerals.

✅ Feed Frequently and Consistently

Feed pigs 2–3 times daily.

Stick to consistent feeding times.

Avoid sudden feed changes to prevent digestive issues.

✅ Provide Clean Drinking Water at All Times

Water is essential for digestion and weight gain.

Pigs may reduce feed intake if water is limited or dirty.

✅ Add Feed Additives or Supplements (if needed)

Lysine and methionine support muscle growth.

Probiotics and enzymes help digestion and nutrient absorption.

Growth boosters or premixes (approved for your region) can improve efficiency.

✅ Reduce Feed Wastage

Use proper feeders that prevent spillage.

Only give as much feed as pigs can eat at a time.

✅ Use Energy-Dense Feeds

Mix in ingredients like:

Maize/corn (high energy)

Cassava or sweet potato (as a partial energy source)

Soybean meal or fishmeal (high protein)

Avoid overuse of cheap fillers like bran if they lower nutrient density.

✅ Monitor Weight Gain

Weigh pigs regularly (every 2 weeks if possible).

Calculate Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) — lower FCR = better efficiency.

✅ Keep Pigs Healthy

Sick pigs eat less and grow slower.

Deworm every 4–6 weeks.

Vaccinate and keep pens clean and stress-free.

Why Boran???

1. The genetic composition of the Boran is unique, making it your best choice for cross breeding...

European Bos Ta**us 26%
Bos Indicus 64%
African Bos Ta**us 12%

2. The Boran is the mother cow of Africa...

The Boran cows have very good udders with wellformed teats and she produces enough milk to wean calves that weigh more than 50% of dams weight at weaning. Their good mothering instinct provides a deterrent against predators. This trait also generates an excellent survival rate of the calves. She produces small calves at birth, male calves average 28kg and female calves average 25kg. Calving problems hardly exist.

3. Longevity...

It is quite normal for a 15-year-old cow to be sound mouthed and it is also on record that a 16-year-old Boran bull is still producing high quality semen for artifical Insemination.

4. Fertility...

It is acknowledged that the greatest attribute of the Boran is its fertility. Even under harsh conditions the Boran cow will continue to breed and rear calves and do this without punishing herself. One explanation for this high fertility is that the cow has relatively low body weight loss over the suckling period, thereby maintaining a good condition, thus able to conceive again.

5. Disease Resistance...

A thick loose but very motile skin with a very short covering of hair and a high secretion of an oily substance makes the Boran a less desirable host for ticks and flies. This together with thick eye banks with very long eyelashes and a long tail which hangs to the ground with a big well-formed switch all protect this indigenous breed against insects.

6. Temperament...

Boran cattle are recognized as being generally quite, docile and easy to handle. This trait has developed over many generations of cattle living close to man.

7. Carcass Quality...

Trails in Nebraska, USA, shows that the Boran and its crosses score consistently better than other Zebu Breeds for meat tenderness, carcass marbling and rib eye area. In recent tests done in Australia, the Boran scored two stars for meat tenderness.

8. Herd instinct...

The herd instinct of the Boran makes it easy to manage in the bush country. The strong herd instinct makes it almost impossible to steal a single animal out of a herd, thus making an attempt to steal them a very difficult task.

9. Good converter of roughage into good quality beef...

The Boran is a breed that is successfully fattened of the veld with no energy supplement. The Boran is also a good browser and under difficult circumstances it has the ability to stay in a good condition. The Boran hardly ever utilizes salt licks.

10. Early Maturing...

Boran heifers reach puberty at an average age of 385 days, where after she will produce a calf every year throughout her lifetime.

5 Facts Showing Why Pig Farming is a Game-Changer in Agribusiness!!

Pig farming is fast becoming a lucrative sector within agribusiness.

Here are key reasons why it’s a powerful opportunity for anyone looking to diversify or enter the agriculture industry:
1. High Reproductive Rate
Pigs have a rapid and high reproductive rate, allowing farmers to expand their herd quickly. A single sow can produce 10-12 piglets per litter and may give birth twice a year, meaning you can multiply your stock rapidly with relatively low initial costs.
2. Efficient Feed Conversion
Pigs are among the most efficient animals at converting feed into body mass, often requiring less feed to reach market weight compared to other livestock. This efficiency not only saves on feed costs but also ensures pigs reach maturity faster, allowing for quicker returns on investment.
3. Strong Demand and Versatile Market
Pork is one of the most widely consumed meats worldwide, making pig farming a reliable income source. Additionally, pigs produce various marketable products beyond meat, such as fat (lard), hide (used in leather production), and other by-products that add further revenue streams.
4. Adaptable to Small and Large-Scale Operations
Pig farming can be scaled to fit both small and large operations, making it accessible for different budgets and land sizes. Smallholders can raise a few pigs for local markets, while larger farms can cater to more extensive markets with significant profit potential.
5. Potential for Value-Added Products
The pork industry offers room for creating value-added products like bacon, sausage, ham, and packaged pork, which often sell at higher prices. With added processing, farmers can capture a more significant share of the market, making pig farming not just about livestock but also about agro-processing and product development.
