Good morning Adelaide.

The market is open and ready for another busy Sunday at the Adelaide Showground.

Our farmers, growers and producers are here with fresh seasonal produce, artisan foods, flowers, coffee, breakfast and all the ingredients you need for the week ahead. Take your time, have a wander, chat with the people who grow and make your food, and enjoy a relaxed Sunday morning with us.

If you're making a day of it, there's plenty happening around the Showground too. Gilles Street Market is trading next door with local makers, artists, vintage treasures and collectibles, while Oz Comic-Con and the Mega Toy Fair are also here this weekend.

So grab a coffee, fill your baskets and enjoy everything on offer.

Open today 8.30 am until 12.30 pm.

Real Farmers. Real Food. Real Families.

After a short seasonal break, DJS Garden Fresh Citrus returns to the market this Sunday and we know many of you have been eagerly waiting for the fresh orange juice to make its comeback.

While they were away from the market, we headed up to Nildottie on the Murray River as part of our Producer Guarantee site visits, spending time on farm with Julie and her family to see first hand where the citrus and almonds are grown.

Walking through rows of citrus trees planted more than 40 years ago by Julie’s parents, alongside newly planted orange trees preparing for future seasons, was a reminder that many of our stallholders are not just businesses, but multi generational farming families continuing to grow and evolve.

The market stall itself is a real family affair. Many of you will know Dave and Joy from behind the stall with their homemade cordials, baked goods and preserves, while Darren helps create those much loved citrus ice poles and fresh juices using fruit grown right there on the property.

This Sunday they return with freshly harvested almonds, seasonal citrus, fresh orange juice, cordial, biscuits, cakes, preserves and all the farm made favourites many of you have been missing.

And yes… we know there are already kids asking when the ice poles are coming back too, even if the weather is a little cooler.

You’ll find DJS Garden Fresh outdoors next to N&M Tsimiklis Produce & Families this Sunday morning.

When you shop at the Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market, you’re buying direct from the people who grow and make your food right here in South Australia.

This morning you might see many of our volunteers like Lyn welcoming you at the gate, Aaron delivering supplies to stallholders, Sophie and Yolanda helping customers at the Information Stand or Paulie leading a Kids Corner activity.

You might also spot members of our volunteer Market Committee doing their weekly shop, supporting stallholders and helping guide the future direction of the market through regular meetings behind the scenes.

And some of our other volunteers like Enid assist during the week in the office, helping prepare community promotions and activities for events like Easter, Christmas, Mother’s Day and Bee Week like we are celebrating today.

We even have another Aaron who regularly comes in after the market finishes just to help us bump down at the end of the day.

These are just some of the 20 plus volunteers who help make our market happen all year.

And each Sunday we also welcome volunteers from different community organisations helping run our Community Connect Sausage Sizzle program, raising funds for causes close to their hearts. This week’s sausage sizzle is being run by Rotary Club of Adelaide Central

As a not for profit organisation, volunteers are a huge part of our community. From helping at events and children’s activities to supporting promotions, customer service and market operations, they help make Sunday mornings possible.

So while it may officially be Volunteer Week, these people deserve thanking every single Sunday.

If you see one of our volunteers today, make sure you say hello or thank you. They help make this community what it is.

Did you know the Cookery Competition at the Royal Adelaide Show is celebrating 100 years this year?

Cookery first appeared at the Royal Adelaide Show back in 1926. At the time, only women were permitted to enter and there were just 18 classes including jams, bread, damper, scones, cakes, puddings and preserves.

A century later, the competition has grown into one of the Show’s most loved sections, with more than 190 classes now open to everyone including children, schools, families and everyday home cooks.

The Adelaide Showground Farmers' Market is proud to sponsor a number of classes this year, helping encourage more people to get creative in the kitchen using fresh ingredients and old family favourites.

If you’ve ever thought about entering your best pies, tarts, cake or jam, this might be the year to give it a go. There’s now less than 30 days left to enter, so don’t think about it too long.

You can view the schedule and enter online here: https://www.theshow.com.au/competitions/cookery/?utm_source=chatgpt.com&tab=competitor-info

Please note during the Royal Adelaide Show period, the market relocates to a series of Pop Up Markets while the Showground undergoes bump in and bump out. Keep an eye on our Events page for dates and details: https://adelaidefarmersmarket.com.au/events/

Love seeing one of our own making the front cover.

Deborah from Taronga Almonds was recently featured as the cover story in Smart Farmer News by the Stock Journal sharing the story behind this Fleurieu Peninsula family business and their commitment to sustainable packaging, heritage almond varieties and small batch production.

You’ll find Taronga Almonds inside the Market Pavilion every Sunday morning, with a beautiful range of raw, roasted and flavoured almonds, almond butters, baking products and chocolate coated treats.

Their heritage almond varieties are known for their nuttier, creamier flavour and are pollinated by orchard bee hives each July before harvest in February. With this week also celebrating World Bee Day, it’s a timely reminder just how important pollinators are to so much of the food we enjoy each week at the market.

Deborah is always experimenting with new flavours and products, so there’s usually something new to discover at the stall too.

We’ll also be sharing a simple homemade almond milk recipe in next week’s market newsletter, so stock up on almonds this Sunday and grab a copy of Smart Farmer News from the Chook Book Nook inside the Market Pavilion while you’re here.

Meet Aaron, one of our much loved volunteers at the Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market.

If you shop regularly at the market, there’s a good chance you’ve already met him. Aaron often volunteers as one of our Gate Greeters, welcoming customers as they arrive on a Sunday morning with a smile and friendly chat.

Aaron first started volunteering with us in April 2024 while studying to become a registered nurse. Originally from Vietnam, he completed his high school years in Adelaide and quickly became part of the market community.

Over time, Aaron has become far more than just a volunteer to us. He’s like a son, a brother and a friend.

He has helped through many market bump ins and bump outs, always happy to lend a hand wherever needed.

Aaron is passionate about local food, a regular shopper and has probably tried something from almost every stall at the market. He knows exactly who sells what, enjoys a good local brew and has fully embraced Aussie culture along the way.

Like many of our volunteers, Aaron gives up his time simply because he enjoys being part of the community here.

During National Volunteer Week, we want to say thank you not only to Aaron, but to all of the volunteers and volunteer Market Committee members who help make the market happen each week. From Kids Corner and gate greeting to Information Stands, market statistics, promotions and community fundraising sausage sizzles, their contribution means more than words can say.

We currently have more than 20 volunteers involved with the market across the year, many of whom have been with us for a long time because this place genuinely feels like community.

Thank you Aaron, and thank you to every volunteer who helps bring the market to life each Sunday morning.

If you’ve ever thought about volunteering with us, we’d love to hear from you. There are lots of different roles available and we’re always happy to help match people with something that suits their interests.

Bees are some of the hardest workers in our food system, but they’re not alone.

Alongside butterflies, beetles, birds and other pollinators, bees help pollinate many of the crops we eat and the plants that feed farm animals. In fact, almost two thirds of Australia’s agricultural production benefits from bee pollination. Without pollinators, our food security, biodiversity and ecosystems are all at risk.

Most people know the European honey bee, but did you know Australia is home to an estimated 2,500 native bee species?

Some are tiny, only 2mm long, while the Great Carpenter Bee can grow to around 24mm. Native bees come in incredible colours including green, blue, red, yellow and black. Some are smooth and almost hairless, while others, like the Teddy Bear Bee, are covered in soft golden fur.

Many Australian native bees are solitary bees, meaning they don’t live in large hives. Instead, they nest in small holes in timber, hollow stems or natural spaces in the garden. These bees are incredibly important pollinators because they carry dry pollen on their bodies, making them highly effective at pollinating flowers and crops.

One of the easiest ways to support pollinators is by planting bee friendly flowers, avoiding unnecessary pesticides and creating safe nesting spaces like bee hotels.

This Sunday, children can do their small part to help pollinators by creating their own Bee Hotel at Kids Corner in the Market Pavilion between 10am and 11am.

The activity is free, with limited numbers available.

Because protecting pollinators isn’t just about bees. It’s about protecting the future of our food system too.
