What is Biltong ?
Biltong is one of the well known traditional South African foods and is made by air drying meat.
While many people compare biltong to jerky, biltong is more natural, being slowly air-dried and only spiced with simple ingredients.
Jerky is covered in artificial sauces and cooked at high temperature in a couple of hours. The taste of biltong relies on more the natural simple flavors and the slow air-dried process whereas jerky is covered with a marinate that contains high amounts of sugar and salt.
Is Biltong Healthy?
Biltong is a great source of protein, contains high levels of iron and has low to zero carbohydrates. If you follow a high-fat, low-carb diet, such as a keto, biltong is the perfect, tasty snack.
What does Biltong taste like?
While there are different types and flavors of biltong available, the underlying taste of biltong is that of a well-seasoned steak with the meat being the primary taste. This differs from jerky where the sauces will often completely overpower the taste of the meat. Biltong is cured and seasoned with vinegar and various spices.
