🤝 Why Cooperatives Matter in Communities
A cooperative is more than just a business.
Unlike traditional businesses, cooperatives are owned by their members and exist to benefit the community they serve, rather than maximise profits for shareholders.
For nearly two decades, the Atherton Food Co-op has been providing our region with access to organic, biodynamic, local, and ethically sourced food while creating a place where people can connect around shared values.
Cooperatives help communities by:
🌱 Keeping more money circulating locally
🌱 Supporting local growers, producers, and small businesses
🌱 Giving members a voice in how the organisation operates
🌱 Creating jobs and volunteer opportunities
🌱 Building resilience by strengthening local food systems
🌱 Bringing people together around common goals and shared values
Every time you shop at a cooperative, become a member, volunteer, or simply tell a friend about it, you're helping to build something that belongs to the community itself.
In a world where many decisions are made far away from the people affected by them, cooperatives offer a different model—one based on participation, connection, and local ownership.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the Atherton Food Co-op over the years. Together, we're helping create a stronger, healthier, and more connected community. 💚
