The last few days have made Den and I sit and reflect on what it actually means to have a family business.
When we think back to the early days, our kids have been part of this business for as long as they can remember. Most of our customers would remember seeing them running around the shop when they were little standing on tiptoes trying to help, helping clean the glass, helping count the till and thinking it was the most exciting job in the world.
They’d find little jobs to do, make kebabs, help wherever they could and, as they got older, those little jobs turned into actually working in the shop.
There have been plenty of early mornings and late nights over the years, particularly around Christmas. There have been times when things haven’t been easy and times when the business has had to come first. There have been sacrifices, without a doubt. But there have also been so many amazing times and memories made together.
And I think that’s what has really hit us over the last few days. This business has never just been about just Den and I. Our kids have grown up in it. They’ve grown up knowing our customers, knowing our staff, understanding what hard work looks like and seeing all the highs and lows that come with running a small family business.
They really don’t know much different.
Callum now has his own trade but still comes in and helps us whenever we need him. Baxter is a qualified butcher and works alongside us, and Immi works in the shop whilst studying at Latrobe.
To see them now, and to think back to those little kids standing on tiptoes trying to help Mum and Dad, makes us incredibly proud.
So this is really just a big thank you to our three kids Callum, Baxter and Immi.
Thank you for growing up alongside us and this business. Thank you for all the little jobs, the long days, the helping out and for being part of it all without ever really knowing any different.
When we look back over the last 21 years, we realise just how much of our family’s story is woven through this little business.
It’s something we’re incredibly grateful for.
