A myth worth busting.

Most home spice racks have at least one jar that is older than the children of the house.

The truth is that spices are not non-perishable. They go stale, slowly and quietly. The little jar of paprika you bought in 2019 is technically still safe to eat, but the flavour is long gone, which is why your roast chicken never quite tastes the way it did the first time you made it.

A quick test. Open a jar and smell it. If you cannot tell what it is supposed to be in two seconds, it is past its best.

This weekend, do an audit. You will be horrified, and your cooking will thank you.

Tell us in the comments. What is the oldest jar in your spice rack?

Quick update from the hunt list.

We asked which spices you could never find at your local supermarket. The list was long, and we have been working through it.

Just loaded onto the website:

Ground sage. Dill seeds. Chicken salt. Lebanese seven spice. Lemongrass powder. Lemon pepper. Bell pepper flakes. Ajwain seeds. Panch puran. Caraway powder. Hot paprika. Celery powder. Mixed peppercorns whole. Buckwheat kernels. Stoneground wholewheat bakers flour. Juniper berries. Fennel ground. And a few more.

You asked, we sourced, thank you for helping us shape our Pantry.

Tell us what is still missing. We are listening.

Check out the newcomers -

There is a moment we think about every single time we pack an order. The moment you lift the lid.

The wooden spoon. The welcome card. The spices and products wrapped and waiting.

We want it to feel like something arrived from our kitchen to yours, because that is exactly what it is. Real ingredients, thoughtfully chosen, for the moments that matter most.

We are Chantelle and Andy, and yes, the grandmas are real. Everything that leaves here is packed by hand, with care in every order.

Welcome to our table. Swipe through and come meet us properly.

For the Skinnymixers cooks in here.

Which Nikalene cookbook do you reach for most often?
Dinners 4. The Healthy Mix IV. Healthy Mix VI. SkinnyAsia. A Little Taste of …….

Whichever it is, chances are we have the spice pack ready to go, so you can cook your way through the whole book without a single supermarket run.

Tell us your most-cooked and your most-loved recipe from your favourite.

We will pull together a winter cooking shortlist from your answers.

A massive thank you for the response to yesterday’s post.

We are working through every single comment and the hunt list is officially long. Aleppo chilli, basil seeds, ground sage, native spices, sulphur-free dried fruit, all noted and on the way.

For everything that came up that we already stock e.g sumac, fenugreek, chipotle, celery salt, pink peppercorns, makrut lime leaves, ras el hanout, the full peppercorn rainbow just loaded this morning. All on the shelf, ready for you.

Keep them coming, the more obscure the better. You are shaping the shop in real time.

Meanwhile in other news, a woman on the Central Coast has been caught on camera pocketing a Chicken Salt shaker into her cardigan.

We see her. We understand her.

Good news, we stock a proper Chicken Salt and we are rushing to load it on the website this morning. Check back soon. No cardigan required.

If you have ever stood in the spice aisle of a big chain wondering where the sumac is, or driven across town hunting for fenugreek that does not cost a fortune, you are exactly who we built this shop for.

Grandma’s Pantry carries the spices most supermarkets simply do not bother with. Sumac, nigella seeds, fenugreek seeds and powder, makrut lime leaves, dried curry leaves, Szechuan pepper, star anise, whole cardamom pods, ancho and guajillo chillies, mace, saffron threads, and dried shiitake and porcini for the slow-cooked dishes that earn their keep.

The kind of pantry that makes you stop apologising for following the recipe exactly.

And we send them everywhere. From inner-city Brisbane to Wagga Wagga, Humpty Doo to Yackandandah, Goondiwindi to Wee Waa, Nar Nar Goon to Come By Chance, and right down to Penguin and Snug in Tasmania.

If Australia Post can find your letterbox, so can we.

Rural pantry, regional pantry, suburban pantry.
All welcome here.

Behind every bag that lands on your doorstep, there is a kitchen. Ours.

Before any product earns a spot on the Grandma’s Pantry Online shelf, it has to earn a spot at our table first. Andy gets curious. Chantelle gets opinionated. The pans come out, the pantry doors swing open, and the testing begins.

Right now, there is something quietly bubbling away in our kitchen.

New blends. New ideas. New flavours rooted in the heritage we grew up with and the meals we still cook for the people we love.

We are not quite ready to pull back the curtain, but we wanted you to know it is happening.

Because here is the thing. You deserve more than products picked from a catalogue and shipped without a second thought. You deserve ingredients we have already cooked with, seasoned with, and served to our own family and friends. If it does not pass the test here, it never reaches you.

Keep an eye on this space over the coming weeks.

We will be introducing ourselves properly, sharing the stories behind the new range, and letting you in on a little of who we are and why we do this.

Until then, the testing continues.
