When soil gets too dry for too long it may become hydrophobic. A waxy coating forms that repels water so that it can’t soak through; like a sponge that dries out too much and doesn't absorb water when it's run under a tap.

Your plants may show signs of drought stress despite your diligent watering! You might be able to see the water rolling off the top, or down the sides of a pot.

You can test this out by digging a little way down after watering - is it dry when you thought you’d given plenty of water?
Products like RapidSoak are quick, band aid fixes. Long term you’ll be wanting to add…? You guessed it - organic materials like compost and aged manure! Plenty of organic material in your garden beds will improve the water holding capacity of your soil.

Christmas beetle larvae pupate in spring to early summer, preparing for emergence in late spring to summer (November–January, coinciding with Christmas, hence their name). Adults feed on eucalyptus leaves, living only for a few weeks to mate and lay eggs during summer.

Larvae (grubs) emerge and feed on roots of grasses and other plants for around 12–24 months. They are rarely a problem in home gardens, and it’s best to leave them be. They play an important role in the ecosystem, with many species now declining. Avoid digging them up or harming them. Instead let natural predators like birds, possums, and parasitic wasps keep populations in check. If you do spot some in your garden, log it here https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/christmas-beetle-count.

Friendly reminder to net your fruit trees now to protect from birds and pests! Make sure your netting is wildlife friendly, and if fruit fly are a concern in your area you may want to consider using a finer grade mesh. And don’t forget to secure the net tightly at the trunk to prevent critter entanglement.
