We’re back!
We finally arrived home at 2am this morning, after a long, long day, and many adventures.
The devastation was heartbreaking, but the community response was the opposite.
Here are some of the beautiful people we met who accepted your donations so gratefully.
The boys at Koori Mail, in front of the truck, with Ella, their coordinator, unloaded half our fruit and veg and accepted all the other supply donations, including tools, toiletries, food, cleaning supplies, underwear, etc. They also took the $1600 of supplies we purchased at Bunnings and Coles, including storage tubs, buckets, fans, snacks and other supplies to go out to families on the outskirts of Lismore and in surrounding small towns.
Their organisation is entirely run by a small group of young women, who just blew me away. They were confident, compassionate, patient and decisive. None of them looked older than their early 20s, but they were directing an army of volunteers and running the whole show. And all while still clearing their own building of contents ruined by the floodwater.
The Mullumbimby Neighbourhood Centre took the rest of the fruit and veg. We bought $1500 of gift cards from Betta Home Living and Eden’s Landing Fruit + Veg in Mullimbimby for them to distribute as well. They were so grateful for the kindness of everyone who contributed. There were tears when we told them how many friends from our community had banded together to help.
Our last stop was The Paddock Project, in Mullumbimby. This community farm produces beautiful fresh food for their community and employs young people from their community. It was under a metre of water last week and they lost everything. The little farm is run by Karen, a gorgeous local woman, who couldn’t quite comprehend that we wanted to donate $1000 towards helping her rebuild the farm. Donations to the Paddock Project are being managed by gorgeous old friends of mine, who live in Mullum and are helping Karen get the farm back on its feet.
$1100 of fuel went into jerry cans to be distributed to locals in Woodburn and Lismore, and into our truck to get it to them.
And we’ve come back to find another $100 donated, that we’ll transfer straight to the Mullumbimby Neighbourhood centre, to put on account in a local service station for fuel.
So after all that, I feel like I need to decompress a little. It was confronting and the scale of the disaster is immense. But the communities up there are pulling themselves up by such a supreme effort of will. They’re exhausted, but they just keep on helping each other. It’s inspiring.
And so are you. Thanks for helping us help them.
We love you. ❤️
