Sydney Sustainable Markets is a market for local farmers and growers to sell direct to customers in inner city Sydney. All our stallholders are all involved in a permanent, hands-on capacity in the production of their products and are able to provide their customers with a real depth of product knowledge. Our market promotes sustainable agriculture by giving priority to biodynamic, organic and min
imal spray produce. We support the process of organic certification and only producers who have certification can use the term ‘organic’. Genetically engineered foods (including animals knowingly raised on GE feed) are not sold at the market and the market is plastic bag free, except where food regulations require plastic bags. We support the rediscovery of Slow Food, inspired by the Slow Food movement’s philosophy of good, clean & fair:
Good. Fresh, flavoursome and seasonal, satisfying the senses, and part of local culture. Produced in harmony with the environment and in ways that respect the earth, its animals, plants, and people’s health
Fair. Farmers and consumers benefit fairly from production and purchase
Sustainable
The promotion & adoption of Sustainable practices: We’re passionate about promoting and supporting sustainable agriculture practices, and also inspiring individuals in urban environments to adopt personal sustainable practices. Connected
The connection between Food Producers and Food Consumers: We hope to be part of strengthening the relationships consumers, and the farmers, growers, producers and makers of food products. We’re interested in exploring the idea that consumers are actually ‘co-producers’, and have a responsibility to understand where food comes from, who grow and makes it, and to make choices that support these producers. Community
The regeneration of Community Spirit: We love our local community, and seek to be part of deepening community spirit through providing a weekly meeting place, a place for information exchange and an education platform for sustainable practices. Simplicity
We believe in the return to nature, the simplicity and spirituality of a life reconnected with the earth. We are open every Saturday from 8am to 12pm at Taylor Square, where Bourke and Flinders St intersect with Oxford St, in Darlinghurst, 2010.
