We are overjoyed to announce that, the Maldon Swap Meet has risen phoenix like, from the ashes of its untimely demise. When all seemed lost, we were approached by the shire and thrown a life line. All due to an innocent phone call from the Tarrangower Times to the shire asking how could this be allowed to happen to such a significant event, one that generated so many economic benefits for the entire shire. Response from the shire? “First we’ve heard about it” go talk to the bloke running it. (that’s me) Next thing I know Todd O’brien rings me up, the shires “Events and Venue Coordinator,” and that is when the whole thing took a turn for the better. We convened a very hasty meeting I explained my difficulties, he listened, and offered some very do-able solutions to get the event back on the road.
While Todd was the person with the experience in the overseeing of events, I am convinced that, without the cooperation and flexibility from both the Planning and Building Depts. This event would have been lost to this shire for ever.
But it isn’t lost, and that is largely due to the goodwill and perseverance from officers of the Mount Alexander Shire. So, a special thank you to Todd (M.V.P.) and Bill Maltby, for interceding on my behalf.
One thing that must be emphasised, all the permits, charges, and documents I was originally required to provide were not being imposed by the Mt. Alexander shire, they are required by the Vic. Govt. for a “Vic. Govt. permit”. The shire simply rescued me from this dilemma.
So, credit where credit is due.
Secondly no safety measures have been compromised. No corners cut, or Standards relaxed. This is the same relaxed friendly and safe event it always has been.
Also, thank you to everybody who spoke up on Facebook, voicing support and concern about our plight. Your support was overwhelming and humbling I thank you all.
