Maree Bracker and Kenrick Riley run Wiccawood Organics on their farm in the Jiggi Valley, forty minutes inland from Byron Bay. Each Thursday morning at Byron Farmers Market (and Friday at Mullum Farmers Market), Kenrick has a range of unusual and traditional, organic vegetables, herbs and spices. As their top priorities are the taste and nutritional density of their produce, they’ve spent the last

twenty years improving their soil: they believe that healthy soil = healthy produce = healthy people. After buying the neglected property in 1993, Kenrick and Maree set about planting forests – almost 9000 tress – to encourage wildlife, and developing creative ways to live lightly on the land. By using organic and biodynamic practices and valuing both the quality and beauty of freshly picked produce, their Byron Stall has attracted loyal, enthusiastic customers who share, tips, recipes, seeds and cuttings. The next project for these creative farmers is a series of farm walks that allow a glimpse into how soil is improved, how crops are grown and some of the exciting ways their range of unusual produce can be prepared.

This is a work in progress! We've chosen a bunch of songs from our teenage youth in the 1970s and are rehearsing to see if we can play them. So far so slightly better than average. But there's still two days to go! Private Sam's Intention, Commercial Rowing Club, West End, Saturday 29th, 6pm. Free. All welcome. BYO.

I'll be away from tomorrow. In 1971, my schoolmates formed a rock 'n roll band which was very successful for its 10-month existence. Then we left school and went in four different directions. Now 54 years on, we've decided to get back together every year -- until we can't! So I'm up in Brisbane rehearsing for our gig at the Commercial Rowing Club in West End this Saturday evening. Hope you have a lovely market tomorrow. Our gig is free if any of you want to make the trip to Brisbane!

We're having a run of 30° days which is a little warm for spring! All the winter crops have stopped growing or gone to seed while the summer seedlings had to be covered with temporary shade cloth to protect them from the very high UV. We're pouring water onto them so they'll stay alive -- but they won't start to flourish until the soil around them is fully soaked. Apologies to all of you and our lovely chefs but we'll be back as soon as we have enough good quality leaf to bring along. We're taking the downtime opportunity to put the deep shank through all the beds compacted after the '22 flood so we can plant green manure crops into them once it rains to break down the clods. We're also catching up on some belated farm repair work, lots of pruning and enjoying the odd sleep in! I'll wander over to the market early tomorrow to buy groceries and have a coffee with a few customers I generally get to spend 20 seconds with. Have a lovely day.

That's the last of our 2024 crop of garlic and we're taking this week off market so we can plant this year's crop in between the showers. Hope you have a lovely day tomorrow and I'll see you all on the 10th.

I’m over in WA visiting family and fulfilling an ancient Irish tradition of the O’Reillys by sampling a glass of dark medicine for New Year’s! So I’m sorry I can’t be with you in the morning. I hope you have a lovely day and a fabulous new year and I’ll see you back at the markets next week. Cheers

That took awhile. Ever since February 2020 I've judiciously managed to stay away from the Covid 19 lurgy. Admittedly, I've taken all the vaccines, still worn a mask on aeroplanes and been generally sensible about which crowded house I'd party in! But we staged a very successful rock band reunion in Brisbane last week. That meant I was up in the big smoke for some time hugging family and old mates in pubs and restaurants and taxis and -- somewhere along the line -- I've finally tripped over someone who was carrying the disease! Fortunately, I'm having only a mild reaction and I'm old enough to qualify for the new antivirals which seem to work a treat. However, for safety's sake, I’ll have to skip the market again this week. I'll be leaving some of our sweet cucumbers and pink dahlias on my neighbour Nicole's stall if you are looking for them in the morning. I'll see you all next week with a full report!

I won't be at the this morning. Back in 1971, I was a member of a high school rock and roll band in Brisbane and we are back together rehearsing for a week so we can play a 53rd year reunion gig this Saturday night. We all turned 70 this year and our wonderful drummer died a little while back (why does it always have to be the drummers?) so it is taking us some time to get back into the groove. But, touch wood, it will all come together on the night! Have a lovely market and I'll report back next week.

We won't be at in the morning. Been out to Roma for an aunt's 90th birthday then stayed at the Bunya Mountains National Park -- a visit I've been wanting to make for 50 years. Saw some majestic trees which dwarf the ones we planted here 30 years ago! Got back to just in time for a big thunderstorm and some welcome rain. We'll see you all next week.

Every Thursday morning my Italian customer Sergio pops in to buy his obligatory chicory. Turns out he has a fresh pasta stall down the alley from me? (I don’t get out much!) I also don’t eat much pasta — particularly wheat-based due to a mild intolerance. But Sergio insisted I try his and report back. Well it was bloody beautiful! And I must have left most of the gluten in the bottom of the saucepan cos I didn’t have the usual reaction. It’s a lesson in always leaning towards fresh food.

We won't be in the morning. The floodwater was lapping our bridge last night and today's expected rain might have cut us off, so we decided not to harvest in case it all went to waste. We'll be back next week.
